Trophies aren’t a must, says United vice-chairman

Manchester United vice-chairman Ed Woodward has insisted that the club do not need to win trophies in order to remain attractive to potential sponsors.

In recent months, the Premier League champions have been slashing their debt heavily due to the increase of sponsors, but after Sir Alex Ferguson retiring and David Moyes taking over, there was a worry that United wouldn’t be as appealing.

What is more worrying for The Red Devils is their current form on the pitch.

Last night’s defeat at Old Trafford to Everton has left Moyes’ men 12 points behind league leaders Arsenal and well of the pace to even finish in a top-four spot.

However, some positive news for Moyes is that the vice-chairman doesn’t think silverware is a must.

‘There’s still a lot of affinity with the club and interest,’ he said.

‘The reality is that you can’t always win.

‘Take Liverpool. They still sell an incredible number of shirts and have the second biggest shirt deal in the Premier League.

‘They have one of the biggest technical partner deals – and they haven’t won the league since 1990. And you can put the last bit underlined and in capitals.

‘If we have a bad year we have the financial strength to change the team. We have so much deeper financial strength that instead of selling three players and buying three, we can do five.’
