UEFA has agreed to use VAR in the knockout rounds of the Champions League.

UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin has said that it will help in reducing misjudgements.

According to Talksport, UEFA has confirmed that Video Assistant Referee or VAR will be a part of the Champions League knockout rounds in February. The European Football’s governing body, however, has also made everyone aware that it will apply the system in a way different than the conventional.

VAR was used in the World Cup 2018 by FIFA and has been considered as a success by a number of people. UEFA is now looking to take inspiration from FIFA and use it in the biggest club competition, with its knockout rounds starting in February 2019.

UEFA initially was not in favour of using the system in this season’s Champions League competition and had a similar view of that of the Premier League, which was to wait for another season before starting to roll it out in the competitions. That stance, however, was nullified in an executive committee meeting at Dublin on Monday and it was decided that VAR will be applied in all the matches of the Champions League knockout rounds. It will also be used in the Europa League final 2019, the European Under-21 Championship and the Nations League Finals.

Speaking about the decision, UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin said: “We are ready to use VAR earlier than initially planned and we are convinced that it will be beneficial for our competitions as it will provide valuable help to match officials and will allow to reduce incorrect decisions.”
