Manchester United have joined the race to sign 28-year-old Porto striker Jackson Martinez ahead of North-West rivals Liverpool.

The Colombia international has been heavily tracked by Premier League clubs since last summer’s World Cup in Brazil, where he scored two goals, with Tottenham Hotspur also in the race to sign the Porto frontman.

Reports are stating that a Manchester United scout was in attendance at Porto’s victory over Moreirense yesterday as manager Louis Van Gaal looks set to strengthen his squad for a serious title challenge next season.

Martinez has scored 16 goals so far in the Primeira Liga this season, as both his club and league’s top scorer. This could see a summer transfer battle between the Premier League trio, however, his agent has rubbished suggestions Martinez is prepared to join the Premier League.

His agent boldly stated: “His desire is clear: he wants to play in Seria A. He has his heart set on Italy and if he were to leave Porto then Serie A would be his first choice.”

It would come as a surprise if the striker couldn’t be persuaded to join the Premier League, as one of the world’s top leagues. Meanwhile, Serie A is currently in a poor state, with Juventus and AS Roma his only likely destinations if he were to get his desired move, with attendances poor and the country’s biggest clubs such as Inter and AC Milan both currently struggling to compete.

Whoever Martinez potentially joins will command a fee of around ÂŁ27.5 million.
