Louis Van Gaal is planning to hijack Liverpool’s bid to sign the City winger

Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has reportedly contacted the player’s agent regarding a move, according to Sunday People.

James Milner, 29, looks almost certain to leave Manchester City in the summer, after reports claimed he recently turned down an improved £130,000-a-week deal to remain at the Etihad.

The England international looked set to join up with Liverpool, following the departure of club talisman Steven Gerrard to America.

However, speculation regarding the future of manager Brendan Rodgers and Raheem Sterling combined with a poor end to the season has given Milner food for thought.

Van Gaal’s preferred player

The former Aston Villa man is a real engine in midfield and has plenty of title-winning experience which is exactly what the United manager wants ahead of next season.

Should Milner leave City, he may be replaced by Juventus’ Paul Pogba, who would be allowed to leave Turin for no less than £60million.

The 22-year-old could seal a third trophy of the season for the Old Lady if they beat Barcelona in the Champions League final on Saturday.
