Manchester United star could leave for free this summer as the club has so far failed to trigger his extension clause.

Juan Mata joined Manchester United in 2014 signing a 4.5-year deal with an extension clause of 12-months. However, so far the club is yet to trigger that clause and could see him leave for free this summer.

United have activated that option on a number of players in the last six months – including Luke Shaw, Ander Herrera and Ashley Young – but they’re yet to do so for Mata.

This means that Mata is free to sign a pre-agreement contract with any club that he wishes. It is believed that Inter Milan and Valencia are interested in the Spanish international. Premier League clubs could also join the race soon.

United can still trigger the 12-month extension clause but the fact they are yet to do so raises concerns over the Spaniard’s future and how much he’s wanted at the club.
