Solskjaer wants Valencia to wear the armband whenever he is on the field

Manchester United’s caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Soksjaer has made it clear that there will be no change in captaincy at the club and Antonio Valencia is set to remain the designated skipper.

The Red Devils have made a positive start to life under their club legend with back-to-back victories against Cardiff City and Huddersfield Town and they head into the home game against Bournemouth high on confidence.

Valencia struggled for form and fitness under Jose Mourinho earlier in the season and the veteran is yet to take the field under Solskjaer. However, the manager feels that he is the ideal man to wear the armband whenever he is fit and playing.

“He’s the captain. When he’s properly fit and playing he’ll wear the armband,” said Solskjaer.

“He’s going through a couple of tough sessions now to get him ready for the tough period coming up. There aren’t many better right-backs going forward with his abilities.”

Speaking about United’s recent form, he added: “Whenever you win games everyone is happy. So let’s keep that run going.

“We’ve got to focus on our performance against Bournemouth and getting three points there.

“These two games, yes, it’s been fantastic… [we need to] keep that momentum
