Ernesto Valverde has defended Barcelona amidst accusations of fielding an ineligible player.

The Blaugrana have been alleged to have used Chumi, a player who was suspended for one match after picking five yellow cards for Barcelona B.

Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde has said that Barcelona were right to field Chumi, a young player from the Barcelona B side in their Copa Del Rey first leg matchup against Levante, which they lost by 2-1. The player has been deemed ineligible to take the field after picking up five yellow cards. However, Valverde has said that the player was banned for the match against Eibar but was eligible to play in a cup tie.

Sticking to his decision to use Chumi in the Copa Del Rey match, the Barca manager said, “We have no doubt about Chumi, neither before, nor after, nor during, we think that we should be in the draw.”

He added, “We are sure that we did it well, we knew perfectly well that Chumi was sanctioned and that he could not use the match against Eibar, but in the cup. We could not use Rafa Mujica either. We are convinced of what we have done, we have acted in an absolutely correct way, we have won where we had to win, it is very clear.”

Barcelona have won the second leg by 3-0 at Nou Camp against Levante and have advanced to the next round.
