Vermaelen in Napoli talks

The agent of Arsenal captain, Thomas Vermaelen, reveals that talks have taken place with Napoli over a potential move to the Serie A.

A deal is not expected to be struck until after the World Cup, where Vermaelen is expected to feature for Belgium. The defender has struggled to earn a regular starting place after Per Mertesacker’s strong partnership with Laurent Koscielny, and has featured mostly as a left-back for Arsenal this season.

Vermaelens agent, Alex Kroes, was asked by Italian website CalcioMercato whether Napoli’s interest in the defender were true. He said:“Yes, Napoli was interested in the player and has stepped forward, but as the Neapolitan club have shown their interest, so have other teams, not just Italians.

“However, it cannot be said that the player is close to transferring to Naples. Again: nothing will be decided until after the World Cup, where Vermaelen is going to do his best, then we will face any kind of discourse for the future.”

After disappointing performances from Kieran Gibbs and Nacho Monreal, a defender could be seemingly high up on Arsenals transfer list, and Arsenal could be willing to let Vermaelen move on in order to free up some money for the summer window.
