Thomas Vermaelen has said that Arsenal’s penalty shootout win against Wigan can now lift them into a top four finish and silence Wegners critics.

The Arsenal captain has hailed the way his team didn’t lie down and admit defeat. He said: ‘There was a lot of talk about needing the result for a few different reasons, for the manager and showing we could fight and I think we did that,’ said Vermaelen. ‘It will give us a boost for the rest of the season.’ He added: ‘I’m very happy that we’ll go to the final, that’s why you play these games of course.‘It was a long game with extra-time and penalties, it’s never easy but it’s a good win.’

He has also hailed the performances of goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski after his spot-kick heroics. Vermaelen said: ‘Lukasz is an outstanding goalie, he works hard for it and he deserves this.’ But now Arsenal must re-focus for thier trip to Upton Park to face West Ham in order to fight for a top four finish.
