Tottenham Hotspur star Jan Vertonghen said that he hopes to stay at the club beyond 2020. Vertonghen joined Spurs from Ajax in 2012 and has since become an integral figure at the club. So far, the Belgian defender has made 254 appearances for the club, scoring 9 goals.

Vertonghen’s current contract at Spurs expires in 2019 and he is on course to sign a one-year extension. However, the 31-year old wants to be a part of the club’s scheme of things beyond 2020.

Vertonghen said, “I’ve got a contract until 2020 – there’s an option and Tottenham will take that option. So I’ve got a year and a half left and then we’ll see. The way I feel now, I’ve got at least four to five good years left in the tank. There are no talks [with the club], but that’s something to discuss. At the moment I feel great at Tottenham. It’s a club with unbelievable potential – not just the players but everything around it. Everyone wants to be part of it.”

Vertonghen missed yesterday’s Premier League fixture against Burnley but will hope to feature in the Spurs’ Carabao Cup quarter-final against Arsenal on Wednesday.
