Villarreal defender Ruben Semedo has been charged with attempted murder and has been ordered by a Spanish judge to be temporarily detained without bail.

Semedo faces charges of attempted murder, assault, kidnap, robbery and unlawful possession of a gun. The 23-year-old was arrested on Tuesday after being accused of tying up and assaulting another man last week.

The Valencia High Court of Justice said: “Magistrate court number 6 in Lliria [Valencia] has ordered Villarreal player Ruben Semedo to be held without bail but with visiting rights.

“The judge has accused the Villarreal player of attempted murder, assault, kidnap, causing bodily harm, threats and unlawful possession of a firearm and robbery.”

Catio Balde, the player’s agent, has insisted that the defender is innocent. “Ruben was the victim of a set-up,” he said.

“His family and I are by his side to help him overcome this moment. Everything is very bad.

“The player’s career has been stained. Let’s hope it’s a case that has no serious consequences. It’s bad for a young athlete who was just starting a promising career.”
