Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas Boas will reportedly net around £4.5 million for his services following his recent sacking from the North London club.
Villas Boas’ three year deal at White Hart Lane was terminated by ‘ mutual consent ‘ following Tottenham’s 5-0 home defeat against a rampant Liverpool side, as Villas Boas looked like a dead man walking for several weeks, ever since the 6-0 defeat away at Manchester City.
It was their worst result at White Hart Lane for 16 years and left Spurs in seventh place in the Premier League table, outside the Champions League places.
The Portuguese mananger took the reigns at the White Hart Lane side in July 2012, after an uneventful time at Chelsea, were he got sacked in the March of that year, following some poor run of form.
A statement by Spurs said: “The club can announce that agreement has been reached with head coach André Villas-Boas for the termination of his services.
“The decision was by mutual consent and in the interests of all parties.” Villas-Boas admitted yesterday he was fighting to save his job after a string of poor results, including a 6-0 defeat by Manchester City.
The poor form came despite the club spending £110 million on new players following the world record sale of Gareth Bale to Real Madrid for £86 million.
Speaking soon after the 5-0 defeat, Villas-Boas said: “I have to get down to work. That’s the only thing I can focus on. I won’t resign. I’m not a quitter.”
Villas Boas also pocketed a large amount of competition after being sacked from Chelsea last year.
Villas Boas lead the club to their highest points tally of the Premier League era. He is now set for another huge payout after being fired yesterday morning.
The Portuguese’s fortunes seemed to nosedive after the sale of Gareth Bale, despite a raft of new signings, including Roberto Soldado, Erik Lamela, Paulinho and Christian Eriksen, who have all failed to perform following big money moves.
Villas Boas’job became seriously undre threat, after some heavy defeats in the last few weeks, AVB also annoyed supporters over recent weeks after comments made about the lack of atmosphere at the Lane.
The club’s woes appeared too much for many fans who booed the team at the final whistle yesterday, in front of a grim-faced chairman Daniel Levy. It was Mr Levy who broke the news to Villas-Boas on the Monday morning.
Fabio Capello has been named favourite to take charge at the Lane, with Glenn Hoddle and Roberto Di Mattao also rumoured to be in Levy’s sights.
