Van Dijk doubtful to play a part against Leicester City on Wednesday

Liverpool face the risk of being without the services of one of their key players at the back as Virgil van Dijk is doubtful to feature when the Reds play host to Leicester City on Wednesday night.

The Dutchman hasn’t returned to training since coming back from the club’s trip to Dubai as he is sidelined with an illness.

Van Dijk missed the trip to Huddersfield Town shortly after his arrival from Southampton last season but he hasn’t missed a Premier League game since then, stringing together a series of 36 consecutive appearances for the Reds in the league.

However, as it seems, that streak is in danger, with the Dutchman being absent from Liverpool’s training on Monday.

He is unlikely to be considered for selection if he does not return to light training on Tuesday, which will leave Jurgen Klopp with a big hole to cover at the heart of the defence.

Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren are both fully fit and the duo will be expected to start against the Foxes on Wednesday night at Anfield if Van Dijk doesn’t make it to the eleven.

The suspension of James Milner and injuries to Trent Alexander Arnold and Joe Gomez leaves Klopp with a shortage of options at right-back.

18-year-old Rafael Camacho or Fabinho is likely to fill in the void on the right-hand side of the backline and Klopp will be well aware of Leicester’s giant-killing reputation, having beaten Chelsea and Manchester City back in December.

The fans will be hoping for their star man to be back for the game on Wednesday but the onus will be on the centre-back pairing of Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip to keep Jamie Vardy and company at bay if the Dutchman fails to make it.
