Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney suffered a training ground injury on Saturday following a collision with teammate Phil Jones which ruled him out of United’s 1-0 loss to Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

Walcott said on the injury, “I have seen a picture and it is a very, very big gash. It’s not nice to see. It’s like something out of a horror film.”

“I have seen the actual injury and it is not a nice sight to be honest. It is not going to help his looks I wouldn’t think.”

Due to the injur Rooney has been ruled out of both World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Ukraine, this means that Southampton’s Rickie Lambert could be given his first England start alongside Manchester United forward Danny Welbeck.

Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge is struggling with a thigh injury but remains with the Three Lions squad and hopes to be fit for the Ukraine game on Tuesday.

“It is sad to see but it is an opportunity for someone to come in and take their chance,” added Walcott. “It is great to see Danny (Sturridge) still here at the moment, that’s a positive.”

“Danny Welbeck has started the season well for his club and Rickie Lambert has had a great start to his England career, so the manager has some great options.”
