Left-back was close to La Liga return
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has reportedly blocked Nacho Monreal’s proposed move to Athletic Bilbao.
According to Spanish publication AS, Wenger was aware of the growing interest from the Spanish club but was keen to keep his defender at the Emirates.
He therefore blocked any activity relating the Spaniard with the La Liga outfit and kept any ambiguities surrounding the defender’s future to a minimum.
First-Choice Left Back
Monreal enjoyed a much improved campaign last season, providing strong competition from Kieran Gibbs in the left-back position.
Wenger has been under scrutiny from Arsenal fans for his lack of transfer activity this summer but has at least managed to keep hold of some important players as they attempt another title push this year.
