Wesley Fofana Admits He Considered Leaving Chelsea for Marseille This Summer
Wesley Fofana has opened up about contemplating a move away from Chelsea this summer.
After his high-profile transfer from Leicester City in 2022, which saw the Blues pay £70 million, the French centre-back has struggled to find consistency due to a series of injuries, including an ACL tear.
This has limited his appearances and pushed him down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge.
Fofana, who spent much of last season sidelined, revealed he was tempted by a return to his homeland with Olympique de Marseille.
The 23-year-old, a Marseille native and a known supporter of the club, admitted that receiving a call from the club’s sporting director, Mehdi Benatia, played a significant role in his decision-making process.
“I’d be lying if I said I didn’t think about it,” Fofana said.
“I love Marseille, it’s my city, my club.”
However, the young defender ultimately decided to stay and fight for his place in the Premier League.
“My goal now is to prove myself at Chelsea. I want to win games and establish myself here,” he added.
Despite his injury setbacks, Fofana is determined to make his mark in London.
While a move to Marseille remains a possibility in the future, he has no immediate plans to leave Chelsea.
“We’ll see what happens after my contract, but for now, I’m fully focused on Chelsea,” he concluded.
Fofana’s decision to stay could prove crucial for Chelsea’s defensive options as the Blues aim to return to winning ways in the Premier League.
