Wesley Sneijder has revealed that he turned down the chance to join Liverpool because he wanted to win trophies.
The Netherlands midfielder won Champions League and Serie A titles during his three-and-a-half year spell with Inter Milan but dropped down the pecking order at the San Siro before completing a move to Galatasaray in January 2013.
He went on to score 46 goals in 175 appearances for Galatasaray. But the 33-year-old’s career could have panned out very differently.
“Many clubs wanted to know when I was leaving Inter, and Liverpool was one of those clubs, so people were surprised I chose Galatasaray. Why Galatasaray and not Liverpool?” he explained.
“But I am a winner, I play for prizes, so I went to Galatasaray because I thought that I would win more at Galatasaray and be a champion more so than at Liverpool and I think that I made the right choice.
“I have had nice years in Turkey.”
