What are they doing now: Barcelona and Tottenham XI when they last played a match

Barcelona and Tottenham XI? What are they doing now: Barcelona and Tottenham XI when they last played a match? It’s only a few minutes before Barcelona take on Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley. Both teams will be entering the match at the back of contrasting results in their previous Champions League fixtures. Barcelona thrashed PSV 4-0 while Spurs lost 2-1 to Inter Milan.

However, the performances of both clubs following their respective Champions League openers are also contrasting. While Spurs have won all three of their matches, haven’t won a single of their three matches.

Nevertheless, both teams have some world-class footballers and the match promises to be an exciting encounter.

This match will be the first time both teams will lock horns in 36 years. The last time Tottenham faced Barcelona was during the semi-finals of the now defunct UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup. The match was held at Camp Nou on 21 April 1982. The first leg at White Hart Lane ended in a draw. In this leg, Barcelona won the match 1-0 to progress to the final. They eventually won the final against Standard Liege.

Barcelona

Goalkeeper- Urruti

29 at the time, Urruti was in his first season at Barcelona. He played for Barcelona until his retirement in 1988. Urruti won the Zamora Trophy for the 1983-84 season and helped Barca reach the final of the 1985-86 European Cup. He also played 5 matches for Spain and was in their squads for two World Cups and as many European Championships. Sadly, Urruti died in a car accident in 2001 when he was only 49.

Defenders

Jose Ramon Alexanko

At the time, Alexanko was only in his second season for Barcelona. He played for Barcelona until his retirement in 1993. He played 280 matches for Barcelona, scoring 24 goals. Alexanko also played 34 matches for Spain from 1978-1982, scoring 4 goals. Following his retirement, Alexanko coached a few clubs. He was Barcelona’s assistant manager from 2000-2002. He is currently the director of Valencia’s youth academy.

Manolo

Manolo was just 21 back then and played for Barcelona till 1988. After leaving Barca, Manolo had short spells at Murcia, Granada and Premier before retiring in 1993. He played for Spain’s youth teams but never made it to the senior team.

Gerardo

Gerardo was at his first season during Barcelona and played for the club till 1988, playing 144 matches and scoring 5 goals. After leaving Barca, Gerardo played at Las Palmas for two years before retiring. He played 9 matches for Spain from 1981-1985.

Migueli

One of Barcelona’s most experienced players at the time, Migueli played for Barcelona till 1988. He scored 20 goals in 391 matches for the club. He also played 32 matches for Spain from 1974-1980, scoring a goal. Even today, he is considered to be one of Barcelona’s greatest ever defenders.

Midfielders

Jose Sanchez

Sanchez was Barcelona’s captain at this time and played for Barca till 1986. He played 236 matches for Barcelona, scoring 13 goals. After leaving Barca, he had two-year stints at Murcia and Sabadell before retiring in 1990 at the age of 34. Sanchez also played 14 matches for Spain and was in the squads for the 1982 World Cup.

Josep Moratalla

Moratalla had just begun his stint at Barcelona. He played for Barcelona till 1988. After leaving Barcelona, he spent three years at Catalonian club Figueres before retiring in 1991. Shortly after retiring, Moratalla started managing clubs. He managed four clubs from 1992-2006. His last managerial task was managing Catalonian club Europa.

Esteban

Esteban was one of Barcelona’s key players during the late 70s and mid 80s. He played for Barcelona till 1987. After leaving Barca, he played for Malaga before retiring in 1991. Shortly after retiring, Esteban went into management. From 1995-2012, Esteban has managed 7 different clubs. He was last managing fourth tier club Xerez from 2012-2013.

Forwards

Allan Simonsen

Simonsen scored the winner of the match in the 47th minute. He left Barcelona after the end of the 1981-82 season. After leaving Barca, Simonsen played for Charlton Athletic and Danish club Vejle BK. He retired from professional football in 1989. Simonsen played 55 matches for Denmark, scoring 20 goals. He helped Denmark reach the semis of Euro 1984 and the round of 16 of the 1986 World Cup. After retirement, Simonsen did a bit of management. He managed the national teams of Faroe Islands and Luxembourg.

Quini

Quini scored the winner for Barcelona in the Cup Winners’ Cup final against Standard Liege. He left Barcelona in 1984 and returned to Sporting Gijon where he spent the remainder of his career. He is the 8th highest goalscorer in La Liga history Quini also played 35 matches for Spain, scoring 8 goals. Sadly, he passed away on 27th February this year.

Francisco Carrasco

Carrasco played for Barcelona till 1989 and made 262 appearances, scoring 49 goals. He retired in 1992. Carrasco also played 35 matches for Spain from 1979-1988. He was a part of the squad that reached the final of Euro 1984 where he scored a goal against Romania. Carrasco also managed a few clubs.

Tottenham Hotspur

Goalkeeper- Ray Clemence

At this time, Clemence had just joined Tottenham after spending 14 years at Liverpool. He played for Spurs till his retirement in 1988, helping the club win the FA Cup and the UEFA Cup. Clemence made 61 appearances for England from 1972-1983., playing in Euro 1980 and the 1982 World Cup. Following his retirement, he managed Tottenham and Barnet.

Defenders

Chris Hughton

Hughton played 13 years for Tottenham Hotspur, scoring 12 goals in 297 appearances. He left Spurs in 1990 and had short spells at West Ham and Brentford before retiring in 1993. Hughton played 53 matches for Ireland from 1979-1990, scoring one goal. He was in the squads that played in Euro 1988 and the 1990 World Cup where Ireland reached the quarter-finals. Chris Hughton is the current manager of Brighton and Hove Albion.

Graham Roberts

Roberts was playing his second season for Spurs at the time. He played for the club till 1986. Roberts later had spells at Chelsea, West Brom, Stevenage and Yeovil Town before ending his career at Slough Town in 1999. He was already a manager during his playing days and managed 8 clubs from 1992-2006. He was the manager of Pakistan from 2010-2011 and the manager of Nepal from 2011-2012. Roberts also played 6 matches for England.

Paul Price

Price was beginning his stint with Spurs at the time. He played for the club till 1984. After leaving Spurs, Price had brief stints with Swansea City, Minnesota Strikers and Peterborough United. He ended his career in 1988. Price also played 25 matches for Wales. Price currently resides in  Australia where he works in property sales.

Midfielders

Tony Galvin

Tony Galvin was in his fourth season for Spurs at the time. He played for the club till 1987, making more than 200 appearances. After leaving Spurs, Tony Galvin had short spells at Sheffield Wednesday and Swindon Town before retiring in 1990. Galvin also played 29 matches for Ireland. He played at Euro 1988. After retirement, Tony Galvin entered into teaching.

Glenn Hoddle

One of Tottenham’s greatest ever players, Glenn Hoddle was in his seventh season for Spurs. He played for the club till 1987 and made 377 appearances with 88 goals to his name. Hoddle had spells at Monaco, Swindon Town and Chelsea before retiring in 1995. He also played 53 matches for England from 1979-1988, scoring 8 goals. After retiring from football, Hoddle entered management. He managed England at the 1998 World Cup. Hoddle also managed Spurs, Southampton and Wolves. He opened his own football academy in 2008. Glenn Hoddle currently works in ITV Sport as a pundit for England’s matches. He’s also a pundit at BT Sport.

Steve Perryman

He was already a Spurs veteran during this time and played for the club till 1986. He is Tottenham’s leader in appearances with 854 matches across all competitions. Perryman had brief stints with Oxford United and Brentford before calling it a day on his career in 1990. He played one match for England. Perryman managed clubs in England, Norway and China. He was the director of Exeter City from 2003 to March 2018.

Ricky Villa

Ricky Villa was at the end of his Spurs career at the time. He left the club in 1983 with more than 130 appearances to his name. Villa helped Spurs win the FA Cup in 1981 by scoring the winner in the final.  He played for a few clubs in USA, Colombia and Argentina before retiring in 1989. Villa played 17 matches for Argentina and was in their World Cup winning squad of 1978. He was inducted into Tottenham’s Hall of Fame in 2008.

Micky Hazard

Hazard played for Spurs till 1985 and made 91 appearances for the club. He played for Chelsea, Swindon Town and Portsmouth before returning to Tottenham in 1993 where he ended his career two years later. In 2014, Micky Hazard became the manager of Hadley who were playing in the South Midlands League. He left the role in 2017.

Forwards

Steve Archibald

Archibald was in his second season for Tottenham at the time. He left the club in 1984 with 131 appearances to his name. After leaving Spurs, Archibald played four years with Barcelona. He left Barca in 1988 and had brief spells with 8 clubs in as many years. Archibald retired in 1996. He also played 27 matches for Scotland, playing and scoring and the 1982 World Cup. After retirement, Archibald managed a couple of clubs in Scotland.

Garth Crooks

Crooks was in his second season with Tottenham at the time. He played for the club till 1985. After leaving Spurs, he played with West Brom and Charlton Athletic before retiring in 1990. After retirement, Crooks joined BBC and he is currently the lead pundit on BBC One’s programme Final Score.
