However, these six nations are not equal hosts. The tournament is structured around two distinct hosting arrangements:
The Primary Hosts — Spain, Portugal and Morocco
Spain, Portugal and Morocco are the main hosts and will stage the overwhelming majority of matches, including the entire knockout stage and the final.
This three-nation bid was developed in consultation with, and supported by, the Confederations of CAF (Africa), CONMEBOL (South America) and UEFA (Europe).
The appointment was made official in December 2024, when all 211 FIFA Member Associations convened virtually at an Extraordinary FIFA Congress and confirmed Morocco, Portugal and Spain as the hosts.
This marks the first time a World Cup has been spread across two continents Europe and Africa in the same edition.
The Centenary Hosts — Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay
The three South American nations will each host a single centenary celebration match to mark the 100th anniversary of the inaugural World Cup, which was held in Uruguay in 1930.
These three opening matches will be played on 8 and 9 June 2030, after which the tournament crosses the Atlantic to the primary hosts.

The Centenary Celebration
The 2030 World Cup marks the 100th anniversary of the first FIFA World Cup, held in Uruguay in 1930.
FIFA wanted to honour this milestone by returning to South America, the birthplace of the World Cup, while also awarding the main tournament to a joint bid from Europe and Africa.
Why Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay?
Uruguay — As the host and winner of the inaugural 1930 World Cup, Uruguay was the natural choice to stage the centenary opener. The first match will be played at the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo.
Argentina — Argentina faced Uruguay in the first World Cup final in 1930, finishing as runners-up. Their inclusion honours that historic final.
Paraguay — Paraguay is recognised as the home of CONMEBOL, the South American football confederation. At the time of the first World Cup in 1930, CONMEBOL was the only confederation in existence.
A United Bid
The candidacy of Morocco, Portugal and Spain was proposed by CAF and UEFA, while the centenary celebration matches were proposed by CONMEBOL.
Together, the three confederations endorsed the overall proposal, creating a truly unified tournament that spans the footballing world.
As FIFA President Gianni Infantino put it at the Extraordinary Congress:
