The midfielder ended up at Tottenham but could have moved to Anfield.

Today, the reason for Dele Alli joining Tottenham over Liverpool has been revealed.

The midfielder – who has been a revelation for Spurs – could have ended up at Anfield, with the Reds very interested in him. However, it has been claimed that the youngster didn’t join Liverpool because the club’s owners were only willing to offer him wages of ÂŁ4,000 a week.

Instead, he signed for Tottenham and after spending the rest of the 2014/15 season at former club MK Dons, he returned to White Hart Lane and has impressed in the centre of the field ever since.

Alli wanted Liverpool move

Brendan Rodgers, who was managed of Liverpool at the time, has now spoken out about the transfer that could have been. He said: “We thought we had him at Liverpool.

“The manager of MK Dons actually drove him down to us. They played a game on the Saturday and we were playing West Ham on the Sunday.

“We’d had contact with Dele, it was all above board, I was speaking with Karl Robinson and I spoke to Dele and his adoptive parents. Karl’s did really well with him and he came to me and said ‘I’ve got a really exciting player, I’d love to see him at Liverpool’.

“I spent a couple of hours in a hotel room with him and he wanted to come to Liverpool. It was all about getting the deal done with the club but unfortunately it never got done.

“On Saturday evening we thought it had got done but eventually he went to Tottenham, which was frustrating and disappointing. He’s done really well there.”

So Reds’ fans could have seen the 19-year old plying his trade at Anfield but in the end, it wasn’t to be. Spurs instead now have the youngster and he promises to be a big future talent based on his performances so far.
