The midfielder says he has ’empathy’ for the North London club

Arsenal’s chances of signing a holding midfielder have been boosted after Sporting Lisbon’s William Carvalho admitted his love for the Gunners.

The Portuguese international has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League, with Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United being the main candidates to sign him.

Reports suggest that the 23-year old was close to an England move in the recent summer transfer window, but he suffered a stress fracture to his tibia whilst playing for Portugal in the under 21 European Championships.

However, Carvalho is fit again and back in first team action for Sporting Clube de Portugal; meaning that speculation will once again surround the defensive midfielder.

This could be the optimum time for Arsene Wenger to lure Carvalho to Arsenal following his recent comments to the press.

‘there is a club with which I’ve always empathised’

When speaking to Portuguese media outlet A Bola, Carvalho said: “I prefer not to say, but there is a club with which I’ve always empathised, Arsenal, because of a player who was I very fond of.

In this case I wear the number of him, Thierry Henry is a player with whom I always empathised too.”

He also added: “Maybe this is why I look with more attention to the Premier League.”
