Sporting Lisbon midfielder has new release clause inserted into contract
Arsenal have been told they will have to cough up £35.1million for midfielder William Carvalho after he signed a new deal with Sporting Lisbon.
The Portuguese international was heavily linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium over the summer, but nothing formal materialised after the emergence of Francis Coquelin near the end of last season.
Despite the reported interest from the Premier League, Carvalho was happy to stay put in Portugal and has since signed a new long-term deal with Lisbon, which includes a higher release clause.
In Carvalho’s previous contract, his release clause was worth £29m, but that has now increased up to £35.1m.
Midfield Changes at Arsenal
The 23-year-old is now contracted until 2020 at Lisbon, but with Arsenal planning a midfield overhaul in the summer, they may look to renew their interest in the Portuguese.
Trio Mikel Arteta, Mathieu Flamini and Tomas Rosicky are all expected to leave North London once their deals expire at the end of the season.
This will mean Arsene Wenger will be in the market to sign a new midfielder, despite welcoming Mohamed Elneny from FC Basel last month.
