Wilshere: Defense the focus

Jack Wilshere has insisted that tomorrow Arsenal will focus on their defending against Bayern Munich- and can win the game. The midfielder is convinced The Gunners will not have to chase the tie in the second leg, and tomorrow will be chasing a win. Arsenal lost to Bayern Munich on away goals this time last year, but Wilshere is sure that this year they can pull off winning the tie and book their place in the quarter final.

In the game at The Emirates last year, Arsenal were 2-0 down inside 20 minutes, and Wilshere says that the team know they have to focus on defending, and Arsenal go into the game with an impressive defensive record at home, since only Everton’s Gerard Deulofeu and Steven Gerrard of Liverpool the only players to score there this season. Wilshere is confident that this can work to Arsenal’s advantage,

“We were a bit nervous going into the game last year. We had just lost to Blackburn in the FA Cup the game before. There was a lot of tension and it was a big game. Once we calmed down, we took the game to them a little bit.”

“This year we’ll be intelligent going into the game. First we’ll work on our defensive duties then we’ll begin to play. We’ve often spoken of the importance of staying in the game.”

One factor in Arsenal’s favour, according to Wilshere, is that Arsenal have learned how to ‘win ugly’.

“It’s been a long time since we won a trophy, but this season we’ve shown in games that we can win while not being at our best.”
