Chelsea and United scout defender ahead of possible move

0

Ahead of Benfica’s Thursday night clash with Tottenham, both Chelsea and Manchester United sent scouts to the Estadio da Luz to watch centre back Ezequiel Garay.

The Argentine got the opening goal of the second leg as benfica went on to knock Spurs out 5-3 on aggregate. His defensive partnership with Brazilian Luisao has been a crucial area of Benfica’s team which has seen the Lisbon side to the top of the Portuguese league and pushing for the title.

United are known to be long term admirers of Garay but the 27 year old blamed last summer’s instability for his deal with the Old Trafford side never being reached. Now with Chelsea in the race to sign the defender, there is new competition for a player who is open to a Premier League move.

Tottenham hit back though on Thursday night with two goals for Nacer Chadli to lead 2-1 on the night but a late Lima penalty settled the tie and Benfica are through to the last 8 of the tournament, maintaining Benfica’s impressive run of staying unbeaten at home since October 2012.

Following the match Garay said: “We knew what awaited us was a hard game but we showed that we were prepared for any eventuality.”

I feel sorry for Moyes!

0

Paul Scholes says that he feels sorry for David Moyes and that it is too early to make snap judgements on the Manchester United boss.

Scholes, who retired for the second time last summer after a glittering career, admitted he feels for Moyes because he has had so many injuries to contend with in his first season.

United currently languish seventh in the Barclays Premier League, with a place in the top four and qualification for next season’s Champions League looking unlikely.

Although the mood at Old Trafford was lifted on Wednesday by a stirring comeback victory over Olympiacos in Europe, the optimism was tempered by Friday’s tricky quarter-final draw against Bayern Munich.

Scholes, 39, told Goal.com: ‘It’s far too early [to sack him]. with all the injuries he’s had, I feel quite sorry for him really.

‘He’s never been able to put out the same back four. You see all the top teams, they have the same back four every week, especially with the centre-backs, they

need to get an understanding and rhythm together.

‘Moyes’ signings haven’t quite settled in, Fellaini has had  a lot of injuries as well, and probably hasn’t produced quite what he’s hoped. Juan Mata has been a little slow to get going as well but these players need time.’

Rodgers says Liverpool’s win at Man United was statement of intent

0

The Reds’ victory at Old Trafford was their fifth in a row in the league, a run which has taken them firmly into title contention.

And the Reds boss admits that their win over the reigning champions was so dominant that they will have sent out a message to everyone.

“It was a big statement. Old Trafford has been a notoriously difficult place over many years but we played with such dominance,” he told the Liverpool Echo.

“It was United’s ground, mostly their supporters but it was our ball. We controlled the game.

“We had a beautiful arrogance in our game. The intensity at which we pressed and some of the imagination in our football was great. Defensively, we were very strong.

“We showed the level we’re at in terms of work-rate both with and without the ball. We came off Old Trafford thinking we won 3-0 but could have had five or six. When we played at home against Arsenal we scored five but could have had seven or eight.

“We got five away to Tottenham when it could have been six or seven, and four at home to Everton when it could have been six or seven. It’s remarkable when you put it into context.

“As manager, it’s great to lead these players into these arenas and see them perform like that. The neutrals are looking at us and enjoying what they’re seeing.”

Thierry Henry hails Arsene Wenger ahead of his 1,000th game

0

“I want to wish Arsene many congratulations on this incredible achievement. I have had the privilege and honour to play under him for many years at both Monaco and Arsenal.

“To reach 1000 games for one club is a historic achievement, but not a surprising one. He is one of the very best managers in the modern game.

“I have been fortunate to play for some extremely gifted coaches. I had Pep at Barcelona and he has proved he is the best at the moment but Arsene is more than just a great manager to me because he was a father figure and a mentor.

“I will never forget his advice and guidance over the years and without him I wouldn’t have achieved half the milestones in my career.

“He deserves all the accolades as he has had a huge impact on Arsenal Football Club and the lives of many players. Long may it continue.”

Chelsea are playing the best football this season, claims Rooney

0

Rooney said: ‘You look at the three Spanish teams left in the Champions League they’re all good teams.

‘But Chelsea are probably playing the best football this season.

‘I know they lost at Villa but they’re playing some good football and obviously you’ve got Bayern Munich and PSG who are playing well.

‘It’s a talented group of teams so whoever we get I’m sure it will be a tough game.’

Rooney believes United rediscovered some of their real selves during Wednesday night’s victory and has called on his team-mates to take that in to the remainder of the season.

‘It was a good performance and I think the performance and the result were much needed,’ he said.

‘It was a massive game for us. We came out with a great attitude and fully deserved the victory.

‘After the first game in Athens and especially after what happened on Sunday against Liverpool, we knew that we had to come and give a big performance for our own personal pride and for the manager and we’ve done that.

‘It’s something we have to kick on from now. We’ve still got a few games left in the season and we want to build on tonight. Hopefully we can do that.

‘With a bit of luck hopefully we can go far in the Champions League. We’re in the quarter final so you never know what can happen from there. It’s a massive win and we are looking forward to the draw.’

David Moyes says he has felt ‘ashamed’ about some of United’s performances this season.

0

Moyes, who took over for legendary boss Sir Alex Ferguson last summer, has endured a miserable domestic campaign, as United sit seventh in the Barclays Premier League.

Under Moyes United have lost to Manchester City, Everton, Newcastle, Tottenham, Chelsea, Stoke and Liverpool twice in this season’s Premier League and are all but certain to miss out on the top-four spot.

But after Robin van Persie ensured United progressed to the quarter-finals of the Champions League with a stunning hat-trick against Olympiacos on Wednesday night, Moyes revealed his relief.

‘I think the big thing was I could look at the supporters in the face after the game on Wednesday night because I thought we had given them something to shout about, we had nothing to be ashamed of with our performance,’ the Scot said.

‘In some other games I have felt ashamed because the team haven’t played well enough and I’ve not got a team out which has got a good result.

‘Our form hasn’t been consistent enough, our performances haven’t been consistent enough.

‘We’ve obviously got to get better at that. It’s going to take time, we’re not going to be able to do everything immediately.’

United travel to West Ham on Saturday before taking on City in a mouthwatering Manchester derby at Old Trafford on Tuesday evening.

Van Persie was carried off late in the game after being ploughed into the back off by Giannis Maniatis.

‘We are getting him re-scanned again on Friday because there was nothing conclusive.” the United boss said.

‘He won’t be available for Saturday’s game. We will give you an update as soon as we can.’

Chelsea open talks with Terry over contract.

0

Chelsea are set to open swift talks with John Terry over a new contract at the Stamford Bridge.

The central defender see’s his current deal come to an end in a few months, and Mourinho is keen to keep the Old Guard together for one more season.

Terry, now aged 33 has been a rock in the heart of the Chelsea squad for well over a decade, and the Daily Telegraph reports that the defender is all set to sign a new deal at the Bridge.

He has been playing some of the best football of his career, as the Blues have a six point lead at the top of the Premiership, with just 9 League games left.

The former England captain has been linked with moves abroad, with clubs in continental Europe, and the American MLS all interested in Terry over recent months.

However, Mourinho has clearly been impressed with Terry’s attitde towards the cause.

He has won three Premier League titles, five FA Cups, two League Cups, the Europa League and the Champions League in 2012, during a superb 16 years at the club.

Terry, may have to take a substancial pay cut for the deal, with Chelsea issuing a strict policy of only offering 1 year deals to those over the age of 30.

Chelsea could also offer both Ashley Cole and Frank Lampard new deals, with Real Madrid interested in Cole, meanwhile, American clubs have been looking at the 35 year old.

The Blues look set to offer a deal for Cole, as Gary Cahill also looks set to sign a new £100,000 a-week deal, while fellow defender Cesar Azpilicueta is understood to earn less than Josh McEachran, Patrick Bamford, and Nathanial Chalobah, who are all out on loan at Wigan Athletic, Derby County and Middlesbrough respectively.

Sergio Aguero ruled out of Manchester derby but could return for Arsenal game

0

Manchester City’s top scorer injured a hamstring during last week’s Champions League defeat to Barcelona and was already a doubt for the trip to Old Trafford.

The target now for Aguero is next Saturday’s visit to title rivals Arsenal, by which time he will have missed three games.

Speaking ahead of this weekend’s home game against Fulham, Pellegrini said: “We don’t know yet, but maybe next week he will start working with the squad.

“I don’t think the whole week, maybe at the end of the week he can be with the squad starting training. For United? No, no chance.”

The City boss, who has Stevan Jovetic fit again, gave a dismissive response when asked about a report linking Aguero with a summer move to Barcelona.

He said: “It is exactly the same as I respond to all the other links during the whole year. We cannot talk every week about the players that are coming here to Manchester City and the players that are going out.

“He is a player of Manchester City, he is very happy here and the club is very happy with him also.”

Of more concern to Pellegrini is the mystery knee injury which continues to keep out centre-half Matija Nastasic.

Nastasic has already missed eight matches, and the manager said: “He has at least a couple more weeks to recover.

“Of course we are concerned because the doctor doesn’t know what happened with him. He made all the exams that he needs but we don’t know what happened with him.

“We are taking other opinions. The doctor is in charge of that. The player feels a pain inside the knee but nobody knows what the pain is.”

Liverpool transfer target Mathieu Valbuena looks to be sold by Marseille this summer’

0

The French international was linked with a move to Anfield in the January transfer window, but although a move failed to materialise, the 29-year-old could be available at the end of the season.

The playmaker, who has spent the past eight years at the Stade Velodrome, has already spoken of his desire to face a new challenge abroad, with Liverpool thought to be leading the chase for his signature.

‘A departure? To discover something else next season could be interesting,’ Valbuena said earlier this year.

‘It’s been eight years since I am here at l’OM. I’ve never hidden that an experience abroad tempts me. We’ll see.’

And the latest report by French newspaper L’Equipe could spark the Reds’ interest further, as the summer transfer window approaches.

Arsenal chairman talks Arsene Wenger

0

Arsenal chairman Sir Chips Keswich has paid tribute to manager Arsene Wenger as he prepares to take charge of his 1,000th game at the club.

The Frenchman has been at the club since 1996 and will take his side to fierce-rivals Chelsea on the milestone game in a crucial top-of-the-table clash, but the day before the big match is all talk about Wenger and his special achievement.

Le Prof as he is known within the Arsenal ranks has received high praise from all corners of the footballing world, and now club chairman Sir Chips has released a formal statement regarding Arsene Wenger and what he has done for Arsenal Football Club.

“I think more important than the number is what he’s done for Arsenal and actually for world football,” Sir Chips told Arsenal Player. “He has made it back into the beautiful game, which it’s often called but seldom achieved.

“I think that is the great achievement of Arsène. It’s his wonderful contribution to the style and flow and charm of his football teams.

“What other things he has done for Arsenal Football Club – well, I think he’s given it new character, he’s given it a new sense of purpose and most of all he’s given it pride and self-esteem. [This] is a rather underestimated commodity in some people but it’s to be admired and not denigrated.

“I think that’s what Arsène’s done, he’s lifted everybody up. Whatever he touches has got better and for that we’re all very grateful.”

Sir Chips reserved special praise for Wenger as a man, rather than simply as the club’s manager.

“He’s obviously absolutely dedicated to football, he’s dedicated to his football team, he’s fiercely loyal to his players,” he said. “He makes it fun for everybody but always mind your eye if you’re not onside.

“I admire his dedication, I admire his commitment and I admire his leadership qualities. I really can’t say it more strongly than that.

“Arsène’s great strength is he can ride the rough and take the smooth. He doesn’t seem to get big-headed when things are going well, he’s obviously concerned when they are going badly but he can cope.

“He’s a rounded person and a leader which is what you need as a manager of a football club.”

“Replacing Wenger would be difficult” states Peter Hill-Wood.

0

Former Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood has admitted that replacing Arsene Wenger would be a difficult ask for the club.

Wenger takes charge of his 1,000 game in charge of the club, in a career at the Gunners spanning 18 years, of free flowing, fantastic football.

Hill-Wood, who stepped down from the club due to ill health, after 31 years, sung Wenger’s praises, in a recent interview…

“It will be extremely difficult – I dread to think who is coming in.

“If we were to lose Arsene it would be a nightmare

“There is nothing obvious. I am sure Arsene will have some input.

“He has an enormous amount of knowledge and has developed a lot of really excellent players, who, overall, weren’t that distinguished when they came to us.

“Many of them became household names at Arsenal. Thierry Henry is a very good example, also Cesc Fabregas, Patrick Vieira and Robin van Persie.”

Wenger’s 1,000 game is a Premiership fixture at Chelsea tomorrow, and the Gunners boss will be hoping for a first win in 10 against Mourinho’s Blues.

Hill-Wood also assured fans they had nothing to worry about, despite Wenger being out of contract at the end of the season.

“I have spoken to Ivan Gazidis he is very confident that there isn’t a problem, that he just doesn’t want to sign up right now. That’s all.

“It’s not a question of somebody dangling great riches in front of him. That actually doesn’t interest him.

“I don’t think his enthusiasm has diminished at all. He doesn’t think his job is finished yet.”

Peter Hill-Wood hints at Martinez replacing Wenger

0

Former-Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood has dropped a massive hint that Everton boss Roberto Martinez could be the man to replace Arsene Wenger once he retires from the game or leaves his post at the club.

The Frenchman celebrates his 1,000th game in charge of Arsenal Football Club when his side goes to Stamford Bridge tomorrow to take on rivals Chelsea in a massive Premier League title-race, but with his contract expiring in the Summer, there are fears that the long-serving manager could depart the club.

Despite strong rumours that Wenger will sign a new deal as soon as this season is over, there are still small talks that the Frenchman will leave if the club fail to win a trophy this season, and when asked about a future replacement, the former-chairman at the club admitted that it could be Toffees man Martinez.

‘I’m sure Arsene will have some input in choosing his successor,’ Hill-Wood told the Telegraph.

‘Roberto Martinez? He seems like a good man.’

Jose Mourinho pays back-handed compliment to Arsene Wenger and Arsenal

0

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has paid Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger a back-handed compliment ahead of his 1,000th game in charge of the North London club, by stating that he admires Wenger and Arsenal because they don’t change manager even during bad times, and recently, they’ve gone through a lot of bad times.

After receiving praise and special credit from the majority of the footballing universe for reaching 1,000 games in charge of one club, Wenger would have thought that his rivalry with Mourinho would have been swept under the rug for at least this special occasion, but the Portuguese had other plans.

Speaking in his press-conference ahead of the game against Arsenal at Stamford Bridge tomorrow, Mourinho was up to his old tricks by praising his rivals, and then firmly criticising them afterwards.

Mourinho said: ‘The tribute is to say that any one of us, we’d love to have the same privilege with our clubs.

‘I admire Wenger and I admire Arsenal, a club that stands by their manager in bad moments – of which there were quite a lot.’

The two will go head-to-head once again on the special day, not only in the title-race, but also in Wenger’s career, and could it be on his 1,000th game that the Frenchman finally beats ‘The Special One’?

Sir Alex Ferguson praises Arsene Wenger on career and achievement

0

Former-Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has praised his once fiercest-rivals Arsene Wenger for reaching his 1,000th game in charge of Arsenal Football Club.

When The Gunners go to Stamford Bridge tomorrow lunchtime, Wenger will be in the hot-seat at Arsenal for the 1,000th time, an achievement that only three managers have matched, Sir Matt Busby, Dario Gradi and Ferguson.

Over the years, Sir Alex and Wenger haven’t always been best friends and they definately haven’t seen eye-to-eye, but one thing they did have for each other and still do have for each other, is respect, and in a recent interview, the now-retired Ferguson admitted that it’s a great achievement for Wenger and he is a true great to the English game.

‘I congratulate Arsène in reaching this momentous landmark,’ he said in a League Managers Association (LMA) statement.

‘Having also reached the same milestone at one club, I cannot emphasise enough the level of dedication, resilience as well as sacrifice required and for that I have for the utmost admiration.

‘Over the years we enjoyed some fantastic battles and you could say we had survived together and respected each other’s efforts to play good football.

‘I always enjoy watching Arsène’s sides – Arsenal play the right way. Playing against them always presented special challenges that I burned many hours over the years thinking about.

‘He has always been a conscientious member of our trade who makes it his business to help other managers.

‘Perhaps the biggest compliment I could give Arsène is that I could never be anything other than competitive with my rival for 17 years.

‘Overall this achievement once again shows what stability can bring to a football club and without doubt he has created a permanent legacy during his 1000 matches with the club.’

Ex-Arsenal players pay tribute to Arsene Wenger ahead of 1,000th game

0

As Arsene Wenger prepares to take charge of his 1,000th game as Arsenal manager, several of his former-players have sent him messages and sent in stories of their fond memories with the Frenchman.

Below you can read a great selection from players like; Tony Adams, Robert Pires, Nicolas Anelka, Ray Parlour, David Seaman and many, many more.

DAVID SEAMAN

“We were travelling to Aston Villa. We were in the hotel and Arsene is so obsessed with his football that we watched it every time we had a meal. This time, he went up to get his dessert – he put his apple pie on his plate — and as he has turned away from the table he’s watched the football and carried on walking, but what he didn’t know was that his apple pie had slipped on to the floor.

“We all saw this but he walked back, looking at the TV. He then got to his seat, put his plate down and then, as he’s looked, he’s gone ‘AHHHH’ in shock.”

WILLIAM GALLAS

“After a defeat, we had a meeting at the training ground and some players were late. Arsene was furious. And then he started his meeting, started to talk to us, and then one more player arrived late in the dressing room and he was still furious. He started to speak again about how badly we played.

“And then one more player arrived in the dressing room and he could not be angry any more so he started to laugh. All of the players started to laugh as well and it was a really, really funny situation.”

EMMANUEL PETIT

“We were travelling by train from London and I had a big problem in my personal life.

“My second wife was pregnant and she didn’t want to keep the baby for difficult reasons.

“I was very quiet and Arsene came to me on the train as he’s known me for a long time.

“Then he asked me what was my problem and I told him the truth.

“He said: ‘Life is more important than football so if you have to go and miss the game, I give you the permission to go back to France’.

“I really appreciated that.

“He said: ‘I’ll let you go and take all the days you want. If you want to stay for one week, two weeks, you regroup your problems and you come back with a free mind’.

FREDDIE LJUNGBERG

“I see him as a very intelligent and respectable man, I almost see him as my own father figure.

“I think it’s funny when I see Arsene — who has such a calmness — throw his water bottle when he gets annoyed on Match of the Day.

“I always giggled because it’s not really his personality when you talk to him normally.”

JENS LEHMANN

“We drew at Villarreal and I saved a penalty in the last minute.

“We were cheering in the dressing room, and he came out and said: ‘Well, Jens, if you always make saves like that I should take you out the team more often’.

“He was referring to the time one-and-a-half years before when he took me out of goal.”

MARTIN KEOWN

“I always felt the boss left an indelible mark on people. I was once wearing a stripy shirt and he said to me: ‘You cannot wear that shirt again tomorrow. If you wear a plain shirt you can wear it as many times as you want because no one will recognise it. Keep your life simple, you don’t need lots of jewellery, you don’t need lots of cars or houses. Keep your life simple, take that on to the pitch and you’ll play that way with your football.”

LEE DIXON

“Arsene called me into the office one day and apologised to me on behalf of Arsenal football club because he’d seen my wages on my contract. Not long after he’d been there, he checked all the players’ contracts and realised that in recent years, me and Nigel (Winterburn), the two full backs, tended to get left out when it came to wage rises. He looked at our wages and said: ‘That’s not right, it’s a team game’, and he improved our contracts.”

CESC FABREGAS

“I just want to say congratulations. You made such a big impact on so many players’ careers, especially on mine. I owe you everything.”

PATRICK VIEIRA

“What was quite really impressive with Arsene is that I would go in his office really upset, really frustrated, wanting to make a point. I knew that I was right, so my ideas were clear about what I wanted to tell him. I would go into his office but when I came back out, it was always him who was right! He was really good at trying to change your mind and he did it in a calm, laid-back way.”

RAY PARLOUR

“Arsene didn’t have a go at you too often, but when he did he used to get you in the dressing room at the training ground.

“On one occasion, he tried to tell us off and, all of a sudden, three phones went off all at once.

“He was going mad, saying: ‘Whose phone is this? Whose is phone is this? Next phone goes off gets a £10,000 fine’.

“Two days later we were all sitting in a room strecthing ahead of a game and it was always very quiet. All of a sudden, a phone goes off.

“It just kept ringing and everyone was diving into their pockets saying ‘Whose phone is this? They’ve got a £10,000 fine!”

“It kept ringing and ringing, and ringing and ringing. All of a sudden Arsene walked over to his bag, opened it and his phone was going off. He said, ‘£10,000 to me’ and he started laughing.”

TONY ADAMS

“I had a conversation about God with him once over a cup of tea. It was kind of really enlightening and very spiritual and very moving. He was kind to me and people don’t really see that — in a working relationship it’s very rare but he is very open and a lovely man.”

Everyone here at sillyseason would like to congratulate Arsene Wenger on a wonderful achievement and brilliant career at Arsenal Football Club.
