Chelsea ‘set to offer Fernando Torres for Diego Costa’

0

The Blues have made signing another forward at the end of the season their number one priority.

And despite links to Luis Suarez, Wayne Rooney and Gonzalo Higuain, Costa has emerged as the man Jose Mourinho wants.

According to reports in Spain, Chelsea failed with a late bid for the striker during January’s transfer deadline day, but the club are working on a new offer for the summer.

Costa would cost around £35million, but the Blues are ready to offer £20million – and former Atletico captain Torres as part of the deal.

The cash on its own would not tempt the La Liga side, but the opportunity to re-sign Torres, a legendary figure among fans, would prove difficult to turn down.

Mourinho has lost faith with Torres and with Romelu Lukaku returning from a loan spell at Everton, his first-team chances will be non-existent.

Chelsea are expected to make the offer once the season finishes, with the Stamford Bridge club keen to get Costa signed up ahead of the World Cup in Brazil.

Arsene Wenger ‘met with Mario Balotelli’s agent

0

The Gunners have been strongly linked with a £25million deal to sign Balotelli at the end of the season, with Wenger on the lookout for a world class forward.

And amid talk that Arsenal’s sponsors Puma could help fund the transfer, reports have emerged that Wenger has met with the player’s agent to discuss a move.

Wenger met Mino Riola in London on Monday to discuss the possibility of Balotelli moving to the Emirates.

The negotiations are said to have gone well – and Arsenal are now weighing up slapping in an offer at the end of the season.

Balotelli looks increasingly likely to leave Milan after he was again target of racist abuse last week during Milan’s clash with Napoli.

Lazio hit out at player age claims.

0

Italian Serie A side Lazio have promised legal action over one of their players, after rumours circulated regarding his age.

Centre forward Joseph Minala is 17 according to his club, bur rumours around the internet claim that he is agd 41, in a rather bizarre turn of events in the Italian capital.

Minala was claimed to have told an African Footballing website his true age, something that Lazio deny.

And now it appears that the Rome based side will proceed legal action over anyone who questions his current age.

The Serie A side released a statement regarding the rumours.

“We reserve the right to take action against those responsible for the protection of the good name of the company and the footballer.”

Jospeh Minala also released a public statement via Lazio’s website, in which he denies that he gave quotes regarding his age to the African website Senogo.net.

“I have read the alleged statements posted on the website senego.net in which it says I confessed my real age which was different to what was stated in my [official] documents.

“They are false statements that have been attributed to me by people who do not know.”

Minala joined the club last year, and is yet to make a senior appearance for Lazio, however, he did play in an Italian youth tournement.

The striker has shut down his social media accounts after the un-confirmed rumours.

Brendan Rodgers: We can go for title

0

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers believes that his team are capable of challenging for the Premier League title this season, after watching his side dig deep and come from behind twice to beat Fulham 3-2 at Craven Cottage on Wednesday night. Captain Steven Gerrard kept his cool as his late penalty was the difference and gave Liverpool all 3 points, but they were twice forced to come from behind in a game that had it all.

“We knew this was important,” Rodgers told Sky Sports, “I told the players that this is the sort of game where you arrive in the Champions League- games like this here. You’re playing a team who are fighting and battling to stay in the division.”

The victory moves Liverpool to within a point of 3rd placed Manchester City, whose game was postponed yesterday due to bad weather, and in touch with Chelsea. Liverpool still have to play City and Chelsea at Anfield, which has become a fortress for them this season, dropping just 4 points throughout the whole campaign.

“We know we have to play Chelsea and City at home which we’ll look forward to because we’ve been outstanding at home but we’ve just got to take it game by game. I’m enjoying watching the team develop and improve as a coach.”

With Liverpool not having European football this season, they could have a major advantage over their other title rivals, giving them chance to focus on the league and their FA Cup hunt. They also have the Luis Suarez situation to think about, with the striker sure to leave if Liverpool don’t make it into the Champions League next season.

However, Liverpool have to play all of their ‘big’ games at home (except for Manchester United) and now find themselves 3 points clear ahead of 5th placed Tottenham, and Brendan Rodgers will certainly fancy a shot at this year’s big prize.

Fulham v Liverpool Manager Reactions

0

Steven Gerrard scored a last-gasp penalty as Liverpool moved to within four points of the Premier League summit after a dramatic win at Fulham.

Kolo Toure’s own goal gave the Cottagers a surprise lead before Daniel Sturridge levelled following Gerrard’s delightful pass.

Kieran Richardson took advantage of poor defending by Martin Skrtel to restore Fulham’s advantage.

But Philippe Coutinho equalised from 20 yards before Gerrard’s penalty sealed the win.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers: “Steven Gerrard is peerless in situations like that. He showed brilliant composure. It was a great result. We’ve had to show character to come form behind twice. A brilliant victory.

“It’s a great credit to Rene and his staff and players that we were given a very tough game. In the first half we were not quite on it in terms of intensity, and a mistake has put us 1-0 down. We then got a good goal, thanks to Gerrard’s marvellous pass. We raised the intensity and aggression at half-time. We’re disappointed with the second goal we gave away. This team has shown great characteristics mentally.

“We conceded two goals, that has been unlike us for a while. We need to eradicate the individual errors. Thankfully we have goals in the team.”

“We’re going to keep pushing. We’ve shown enough times we’re a very good side. We’re chasing, other teams are still ahead of us. We need some of them to drop points. We know we still have Man City and Chelsea to play at home. We’ll take it game by game. I’m enjoying as a coach watching the team improve.”

Newcastle 0 Tottenham Hotspur 4

0

An Emmanuel Adebayor double sent Tottenham Hotspur right back into Champions League contention as Spurs beat a lacklustre Newcastle United 4-0 at St James’ Park, on a miserable evening in the North East.

Newcastle were trying to rnd a barrent run of games, with the Magpies leaking six goals in two games, with 3-0 defeats against fierce rivals Sunderland, and a defeat on Saturday down at Chelsea, as an Eden Hazard hat-trick sent Newcastle packing.

Tottenham started well, with Moussa Dembele set up Adebayor, who skipped his man and fired just past Krul’s far post.

Brazilian Paulinho then beat Santon to a lose ball, before stinging the hands of Krul with a rasping drive from long range.

Newcastle had a chance after 15 minutes, as Pappis Cisse lashed wide of Lloris’s far post, following neat build up play from new recruit, Luuk De Jong.

Spurs recent revival under manager Sherwood continued as Adebayor put Newcastle to the sword, and it wasn’t long before the Togolease centre forward scored his first.

Sherwood’s faith in Adebayor was repaid by the striker, who put Spurs into the lead on 19 minutes.

Youngster Bentaleb beat Mike Williamson, and hit a dipping effort towards the bottom corner, which was palmed away by keeper Krul, however, Adebayor was on hand to tap home from around six yards out, to give Spurs a deserved lead.

Lloris then had to be at his best to keep out Santon, then the French keeper had to smother a Luuk De Jong goal-bound curler.

Aaron Lennon shot into the side netting, before Kyle Walker fizzed a rather teasing ball into a crowded area, however, Mike Williamson got to the ball before the advancing Aaron Lennon.

Up the other end, Cisse tried an ambitious cgip over the back tracking Lloris, however to Spurs shot stopper covered well.

Jan Vertonghan the saw his header go inches wide, as Spurs looked for a second before the break.

However, they found a second after the break, on 52 minutes.

Bentaleb twisted and turned his man, before Adebayor collected the ball and smashed the ball at Krul, who fumbled the ball into the path of Paulinho, who stabbed home to make it 2-0, with Krul feeling he should have done better.

Mathieu Debuchy and Yoan Gouffran  both tested Lloris, but once again the keeper thwarted the Geordies.

Newcastle, still smarting from the loss of Cabaye hardly really had a go at Spurs, with Dembele, and then Townsend mopping up lose balls.

Tim Sherwood took charge in late December, following the sacking of Villas Boas, the north London side have won seven and lost just one of their 10 league games, taking 23 points out of 30.

Adebayor, left in the cold by previous manager Andre Villas-Boas, has flourished under Sherwood.

Spurs made the game safe with two late goals in the last eight minutes.

Adebayor found a classy second as he volleyed the ball past a helpless Krul after 82 minutes , with boo’s ringing round the historic St James’, Nacir Chadli then completed the rout after taking a touch and thumping in a driven effort from outside the area past Krul.

All in all a good win for Tottenham, as they go marching on.

Manchester United hold Arsenal in goalless draw

0

Manchester United will be the happier out of the two sides as they left the Emirates Stadium with a point after they held Arsenal to a 0-0 draw.

The game failed to live up to the pre-match hype, and the result does neither team any favours as Arsenal stay second, and United’s top-four hopes take an even bigger hit.

It was the visitors that nearly took the lead after Mikel Arteta was caught napping on the ball, but after Robin Van Persie found his way into the box, his shot was smartly saved by Wojciech Szczesny, who later went on to make one of the saves of the season to stop the Dutchman again.

Soon after Van Persie’s miss, it was Olivier Giroud’s time to miss a golden chance as he was left unmarked from a corner, but his header flew past the far-post.

A couple of half-chances then fell to both teams, but at the interval it was 0-0 and both sides failed to create anything in the final third.

The second-half was very similar to the first, sloppy in possession from both teams, and the goalkeepers denying anything that came their way.

The lead was nearly found by the hosts early in the second-half as Laurent Koscielny’s header from a corner looked destined for the back of the net, until winger Antonio Valencia leaped high to clear it off the line.

With Arsene Wenger’s men pushing for a winner, it was their old-man Van Persie that nearly stole the three points as he peeled away from the defenders and sent the ball flying towards goal, only to see Szczesny deny him with a breathtaking save.

Watching his opponent’s heroics from the other end, David De Gea also wanted part of the limelight, and he did well to deny Santi Cazorla twice late on.

So the draw leaves Arsenal one point behind league leaders Chelsea, and it leaves United 11 points off fourth placed Liverpool.

Here is some match reaction from after the game.

Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny: “We did not take our opportunities today, which is disappointing. It is a positive to get a clean sheet after conceding five goals.

“I tried to react to Robin van Persie’s effort. He did not score a lot of headers at Emirates Stadium, so I wanted that to continue.

“[Talking about the title race] It will be really tight. A lot of teams are very close to each other at the top.

“We are confident going into the last few games. If we show our character, we can do it.”

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger: “Overall, we could have won it. It was a game of few chances.

“Our defensive focus was extreme as we conceded so many goals on Saturday. In the end either side could have won 1-0.

“Manchester United are a good team, so when you go forward they can catch you.

“It is important to recover physically and prepare for the next game. We want to stay in the FA Cup.

“The title race is absolutely open for many teams.”

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick: “We can take a lot from the game. Our shape was good, David de Gea had to make some saves but we had some good chances ourselves.

“It is not a bad draw, but we came here to win. You have to respect Arsenal, as a point is not too bad.

“We have not stopped believing, we believe we will get better. We have to start showing it.

“[On reaching the Champions League places] It is going to be tough as there is a lot of points there. We will take it game-by-game, and go on a run and play well and see where it takes us.”

Manchester United manager David Moyes: “I am pleased, but I wanted all three points. Arsenal are having a great season, so it is not a bad draw for us.

“The way my luck was going I expected Mesut Ozil to score with a free-kick at the end. I am quite pleased with a lot of things we did.

“Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand were very good. They showed all their experience.

“I do not like talking about luck. But you hope it turns around.

“The last couple of games we have had Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie back. The record with the two of them has been very good.

“We have a lot of catching up to do. We have to win games and keep plugging away.”

Adrian aiming for more clean sheets.

0

West Ham United’s Spanish goalkeeper Adrian is looking to build upon a run of four successive clean sheets, and help his side maintain their current good form.

The Hammers shot stopper has impressed since coming into the side last month, and gained the man of the match award in the 2-0 win at home to Norwich City on Tuesday Evening.

He ha also kept clean sheets against Aston Villa, Swansea and Cardiff City, as the Hammers won 2-0 in all three fixtures to charge up the Premier League table, were they currently sit 10th.

The keeper also starred in the recent 0-0 draw away at London rivals Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, after denying several goal bound efforts.

Adrian, who signed from La Liga side Real Betis in the summer, took over the gloves from Finnish veteran keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen, who was dropped following some un-convincing performaces for a then struggling Hammers.

The Spaniard now looks set to be the first choice at the club under Allardyce, after successfully fending off competition from 38 year old Jaaskelainen.

His performances at the Boleyn Ground have certainly made him a real fan favourite at the Hammers.

Sam Allardyce’s side have the most clean sheets in the Premier League and Adrian is optimistic of holding onto that record on the back of their recent form.

“It’s only my job! It’s my job to stop everything and Tuesday was a great day, because that’s another clean sheet,” he told West Ham’s official website.

“Four in a row is really, really difficult in the Premier League and I am really happy. We have to keep going in this direction.

“As a goalkeeper, when you have confidence, confidence in the manager and in the other players, you are happy on the pitch.

“Sometimes I have to help my team-mates and other times, not too much, but on Tuesday I made three or four saves to help the team.

“It’s really, really amazing. The clean sheets are important for the team and it’s even more important for me, because I’m the goalkeeper.

“I work every day with Marge [Martyn Margetson, goalkeeping coach], Jussi [Jaaskelainen], with Rafa [Raphael Spiegel], with Hendo [Stephen Henderson] on the training ground for that and this is my job.”

The Hammers sit in a lofty 10th place following Tuesday’s emphatic win, and host Southampton in ten days time.

Hodgson rules out Terry return

0

Chelsea captain John Terry retired from international football in 2012 after being found guilty of racial abuse. The 33 year old managed to win 78 caps and has featured in the last 2 World Cups, leading some to believe the veteran may return to the international stage once more.

Hodgson told BBC Sport“The door isn’t open because he has retired from international football,

“When players retire, we move on.

“We moved on after our first qualification game, when John Terry limped off, and since that time we have chosen the players who are available, who have represented us well in my opinion, so we will continue with that.”

Terry was stripped of his England captaincy by the FA back in February 2012 following an incident with QPR’s Anton Ferdinand where he was found guilty of racial abuse. Terry was cleared in court in July but still felt the FA’s decision was “untenable”.

Since then, Terry’s defensive heroics for Chelsea alongside Gary Cahill have led to calls for an England return and last week, ex-Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson told BBC Sport“All I would say to Roy Hodgson is that this could be your only stab at a World Cup as an England manager. So why would you not take the best English central defender? You forgive, but not necessarily forget with things like this.”

Manchester United prepare for summer squad shake-up.

0

Executive vice-chairman of Manchester United has today said “It’s fair to say we are focused on strengthening the squad and looking at some players to sell”.

He also insisted “We’re not afraid to move in the market in a way we haven’t in recent years.” He said: “Historically, we’ve had roughly three sales and three purchases each year, and it’s possible we’ll do more than that. It’s a dynamic situation.

“We’re not in the position we want to be in and we’re working hard to change that. We will invest in our squad as needed to make sure we’re competing at the highest level.” Said Woodward “Our focus is on building a competitive squad to challenge for trophies. We have the ability to buy players… to make sure we are competing at the top level.”

United have struggled to find form this term after the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson. Under David Moyes the red devils are 16 points behind league leaders Chelsea and are out of both the F.A cup and Capital one Cup. However they are through to the last 16 in the champions league where they will face Greek side Olympiakos.

United broke their transfer record in January spending a staggering £37.1million to bring in Spanish midfielder Juan Mata from Premier league rivals Chelsea. Woodward said: “We are very pleased to have added a world-class player in Juan Mata to our squad, who has already made a positive impact.”

United’s only major summer signing was that of Belgian midfielder Marouanne Fellaini from Everton for £27.5million. However he has made only 11 appearances for the club and has been out since the beginning of December after a wrist operation.

Man United face tough few games travelling to Arsenal tonight and then to Olympiakos for their first leg clash on Tuesday 25th.

When asked what it would mean for United to miss out on Champions League qualification, Woodward said: “It takes a long time to build a huge fan base. That will not go away for a long time”

“Some of our competitors have not won the league for a long time and they still sell a lot of shirts globally. So that is not something I am sitting here concerned about.”

Inter Milan set to move for Tottenham winger in the summer

0

According to Sports Direct News, the San Siro club, who sit 5th in Serie A are interested in signing Spurs winger, Erik Lamela during the summer transfer period.

Inter’s new owner Erick Thohir is keen to bring in the Argnetine, who moved to White Hart Lane at the start of the season and has been somewhat disappointing in an attempt to live up to his pirice tag.

Lamela was brought to the Premier League by former manager Andre Villas Boas for a Spurs record fee of £30m and the 21 year old has managed just 1 goal in his 17 appearances. Since the start of the year, Lamela has been sidelined due to a back problem so the has been very much an outcast from the first team.

A return to Italy could tempt the youngster but the likelihood of the deal happening would very much depend on the fee Inter are willing to pay. Spurs chairman Daniel Levy would also be keen to regain at least £20m of what he paid for the winger just 6 months ago, something the Milan side will have to think about.

Tottenham boos, Tim Sherwood, has managed to get Togolese striker Emmanuel Adebayor back into scoring form and could potentially do the same with Lamela and another summer signing, Roberto Soldado. But he will have to work quick as Tottenham continue to push for a Champions League spot, rivalling Liverpool and Everton for the spot.

Ince: United lack leadership!

0

Former red devil Paul ince has today spoken out about the lack of on-field leadership in the Manchester United squad. The defending champions face an uphill struggle to qualify for the champions league this year as they currently sit in 7th, 9 points behind 4th placed Liverpool.

In his first year in command at Old Trafford David Moyes has endured a disappointing start after replacing former manager Sir Alex Ferguson. Former United captain Ince believes Moyes is in need of a “Roy Keane-type player”

“When you look at the team, they have never replaced Roy Keane” Ince told talkSPORT. “there are lots of players who have been there a long time. They are senior player who are Man United through and through”

But the former captain and two time premier league winner has called for Moyes to be given more time to rebuild the Old Trafford Side.

“I dont think you’ll see the best of Man United and Moyes for another year or year and a half” said Ince. “He’s got seven or eight players to change in that team”

“They’ve got to give him time. Moyes has got a huge renovation job to do. He’s going to lose probably a lot of players in the summer”

Ince further speculated on the future of Man United this year saying “Who knows whats going to happen with Wayne Rooney? Robin van Persie is going to be a year older. It’s essential that they do finish in the top four, but it’s going to be tough”

Dive Deep Gerrard!

0

Ahead of tonight’s game against Fulham, Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has stated his belief that Liverpool and England captain Steven Gerrard has “a lot to offer” the national team from a holding midfield role.

The 33-year old CM powerhouse is usually dispatched in an offensive midfield role but has excelled in a holding role with Liverpool this season, leading Rodgers to believe that that is where England head coach Roy Hodgson should play him in this summers world Cup in Rio.

“Everyone knows Stevie’s qualities” said Rodgers “so to flip that and become a playmaker in the other half of the field shows the tactical intelligence and how he has a lot to offer”

Hodgson is expected to declare his provisional 30-man squad in May with many other Liverpool names circulating around the rumour mill.

Daniel Sturridge and Jordan Henderson have been consistently brilliant this year. Henderson has begun to justify his hefty price tag, and Sturridge has been the man to watch in front of goal, but also youngsters such as Jon Flanagan and Raheem Sterling have impressed on occasion including the 5-1 win at home to Arsenal last weekend.

Per Mertesacker looking forward to tonight’s clash

0

Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker has revealed his excitement for tonight’s crunch game with Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium tonight.

Earlier on in the season, the German international missed the trip to Old Trafford due to illness and he watched on from the sidelines as his side slipped to a 1-0 defeat thanks to a Robin Van Persie header.

Speaking to the club’s official matchday programme, Mertesacker admitted this was the fixture he always looked forward too when he was a youngster.

“I always supported Arsenal [when I was growing up] and my brother Man United, because 10 or 15 years ago they were always the rivals for first place,” Mertesacker told the official matchday programme.

“Is my brother still a Man United fan? I think he stopped after I went to Arsenal! Maybe in his memories he knows he once supported Man United because he’s got a shirt from that era. But it’s a special game in my memory and it’s still the same now.

“You see these pictures [of previous games against United] at the training ground every day! So you realise and you know how important that was and still is.

“United have a strong squad and when everyone’s fit it’s a really good team. I will never write them off. It’s always a special game between Arsenal and Man United.”

Hazard ” Draw at West Bromwich was vital”

0

Chelsea’s maverick Belgian winger Eden Hazard has stated that his sides 1-1 draw away at West Bromwich Albion was vital, in the hunt for a Premier League title run in.

The West Londoners drew 1-1 in the West Midlands against a resilient West Bromwich Albion side, who are themselves in a battle, to stay in the League itself.

Fullback Branislav Ivanovic put Chelsea ahead with a tidy finish, that beat Ben Foster, however, Mourinho’s men would only leave the Hawthorns with a point, as powerful centre forward Victor Anichebe headed in a equaliser for Pepe Mel’s Baggies.

Despite the draw, Hazrd was content with a point…

“It was a puzzling game,” the Chelsea midfielder told the club’s website.

“At 1-0 I thought we were managing the match well, but we couldn’t get the second goal which would have given us protection, and then the game became difficult.

“I tried to play, we tried to play, but it was a very difficult game.

“It was very complicated whenever I had the ball because there were two or three opponents there.

“They had a plan to defend, as was the case when we played West Ham.

“It was a similar situation except at the end West Brom pushed a lot, their crowd got behind them and it became complicated.

“But it’s still a point even if many people are disappointed. I think this is a point that will count.

“You cannot win every game and it was important we didn’t lose. We’ll improve in the future and we will try to win the next game.”

The Blues missed several chances to win the game, with Ben Foster saving a Torres effort at the death.

Chelsea travel to Manchester City for a Saturday tea-time clash in the FA Cup fifth round.
