Arsenal turn to Juventus star as Walcott’s replacement

0

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed that he will spend money this month after Theo Walcott’s injury has ruled him out for the rest of the season, and it appears that Juventus winger Sebastian Giovinco is one of the Frenchman’s top targets.

A ligament injury will keep Walcott out for six months, and when facing the press yesterday, Wenger confirmed that he will dive into the market now this month due to the lack of depth he now has available.

Wenger has been keeping tabs on Real Madrid’s Alvaro Morata for a loan until the end of the season, but he has now turned his attentions to Serie A as he tries to lure Giovinco away from Juventus.

The 26-year-old is currently out of favour with Juve and has only made two appearances so far this season, so it is believed that they will allow the Italian to leave on loan for the rest of the season.

Giovinco can play as a second striker, winger or play-maker.

Arsenal to offer midfielder new contract

0

Arsenal Football Club are set to offer midfielder Tomas Rosicky a contract extension at the club in order to fend off some interest shown from the MLS.

The 33-year-old’s current deal is set to expire this Summer, but due to injuries picked up by Mesut Ozil, Aaron Ramsey and Santi Cazorla, the Czech has been playing frequently this season and has been in fine form, and was at it again last weekend during their 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup.

It is believed that Arsenal will offer Rosicky a one-year extension and manager Arsene Wenger is desperate to keep hold of the midfield-maestro.

‘He will stay here,’ said Wenger.

‘He is a marvellous player – an Arsenal player.

Rosicky has made it clear that his intentions are to stay at the Emirates Stadium, but several clubs abroad have offered him lucrative deals to join them in the Summer.

Liverpool target reveals Premier League interest

0

Liverpool have been given a massive transfer boost after target Yann M’Vila admitted that he is interested in a move to the Premier League.

Brendan Rodgers sent several of his scouts out to Russia to watch the Frenchman in action for Rubin Kazan throughout the season, and it is believed that the scouts are pleased with what they have seen.

M’Vila was a massive target for Arsenal a few seasons ago, but no deal was put in place as Arsene Wenger wasn’t pleased with his attitude and behaviour off the field.

However, the midfielder’s agent has now revealed that the Frenchman fancies a move to the Premier League and Anfield could be his likely destination.

‘I think many players dream of playing in the Premier League – Yann is no different,’ said Werner Baader.

‘I will not deny there is interest from many European clubs, including English teams.

‘We will see what happens.’

Stoke City after Guidetti.

0

Stoke City manager Mark Hughes is reportedly after Manchester City’s Swedish striker John Guidetti with a view to signing him.

The Swedish striker is still yet to make his mark on the City first team this season, and is still yet to make a start for City’s first team.

The highly rated Swedish youngster overcame a career thretening injury which saw him miss the whole of last season, haulting his development.

Pellegrini is hopeful that Guidetti can go out on loan in the near future to enhance his development, with Stoke closing in on a possible deal, to take him to the Britannia.

However, Stoke may face competition from the likes of West Ham and Aston Villa, who both have striker shortages.

The Swede enjoyed a superb spell at Feyenoord in the 2011/12 campaign, scoring an incredible 23 goals, in just 23 Duch League fixtures.

Clubs abroad have also expressed an interest in Guidetti, with Malaga linked.

His path to the first team is blocked by City’s wealth of front players.

Malaga’s sporting director Mario Husillos was in Manchester last week to speak with Pellegrini about 21-year-old Guidetti.

But it still appears Stoke are the front runners, and could tie up a deal in the next few days.

Chelsea goalkeeper wants talks with Mourinho

0

On-loan Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is desperate to sit down and talk with Jose Mourinho so that he can discuss where his future lies.

The Belgium shot-stopper has been out on loan to Spanish side Atletico Madrid for the last three seasons now, and he is growing increasingly frustrated with the lack of chances given to him at Stamford Bridge.

Petr Cech is still regarded as the number-one at The Bridge and that doesn’t look like changing anytime soon, and Courtois wants his future sorted out before April, so that he can understand where he will be playing his football next season.

The 21-year-old is attracting attention from several European clubs and according to reports in Beglium, talks with Mourinho are set to take place in the next fortnight.

‘My agent is talking with Chelsea. One of the coming weeks I’ll have a chat with José Mourinho.’

‘I think there will be a decision about my future at the end of March, or in the first weeks of April.’

I beg Ronaldo to return, reveals Ferdinand

0

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has revealed that he literally begs Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronalo to return to Old Trafford.

The Portuguese-star quickly became a favourite within the squad at United and became one of Europe’s top players during his six year stay there, but in 2009, he completed his mega-move to Real Madrid, and left everyone involved with United feeling deflated.

According to reports, United were trying to bring back the winger in the Summer, but they failed to do so, and when Ferdinand was asked about whether or not he still talks to Ronaldo, he had this to say on the matter.

“What do you think? He was one of the most dialled people on my phone at the time!

“As footballers you keep your cards close to your chest. If he was going to leave Real Madrid, I think Manchester United would have been the place he would have come to. That’s my view — but no one will ever know.

“I think the opportunity has gone now.

“If we could have done it, I think it would have been last summer. He’s signed a new deal at Real now.”

La Liga star set to reject Manchester United and Liverpool

0

Sevilla midfielder Ivan Rakitic has dealt Premier League duo Manchester United and Liverpool a massive blow as he has revealed that he intends to stay in Spain.

The Croatian international has been strongly linked with a move to England and in particular to the two giants of English football, but after taking time on the decision, it appears that the 25-year-old wants to remain in Spain with Sevilla.

Statistics-wise, Rakitic is the third-best player in La Liga as he has grabbed eight goals and also given six assists in just 16 appearances.

When asked about his future in an interview, Rakitic was adamant that he is happy to remain in Spain.

He said: “For the time being, I only think about Sevilla.

“I have important matches ahead of me and additional responsibilities as captain of the team, so leaving is not something I’m considering now.”

Real Madrid hand Arsenal massive transfer boost

0

Spanish side Real Madrid have given Arsenal a massive boost in their pursuit for a striker, as they are reportedly now willing to loan out Alvaro Morata for the rest of the season.

Morata has been a long-term target for Arsene Wenger and it looked like he was ready to give in after Carlo Ancelotti confirmed that no players would be leaving the Bernabeu this month, but after the striker admitted that a loan move could be on the cards, Ancelotti has now changed his mind it seems.

The player held talks with the club and it is reported that if the deal is right, a potential loan-move could be on the cards.

Wenger is desperate to loan a striker for the rest of the season due to serious injury issues within his squad, but he is not willing to splash the cash this month as he does not know what his side will be like for next season.

According to reports, the plan for Arsenal is to loan a striker this month until the end of the season and then splash the cash on a permanent forward in the Summer, with Diego Costa, Jackson Martinez and Wayne Rooney all on the list.

Jose Mourinho confident of signing Wayne Rooney

0

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has apparently rejected several strikers offered to him because he wants to wait to sign Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney in the Summer.

The Blues boss has been complaining about the lack of fire-power in his squad all season, with the likes of Demba Ba, Fernando Torres and Samuel Eto’o all failing to score frequently.

It was widely reported that Mourinho was close to making moves for Monaco’s striker Radamel Falcao and FC Porto’s striker Jackson Martinez, but it is now apparent that he will wait until the Summer to try and lure Rooney away from Old Trafford.

According to sources close to Mourinho, he has rejected several strikers that have been offered to him so that he can wait until the Summer to convince the English striker to join Stamford Bridge.

Rooney was reportedly unhappy at United at the end of last season, but since then, he has been in superb form for The Red Devils, but with David Moyes’ side failing to perform so far this campaign, a potential move in the Summer could be on the cards.

Tottenham Hotspur confirm Jermain Defoe exit

0

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that striker Jermain Defoe will be leaving the club next month in order to join MLS side Toronto FC.

The 31-year-old will not be joining the American side until late-February as that is when their season starts, so he will remain eligible to play for Spurs until then.

The news first broke out earlier this week that a potential deal was in place, and now both Defoe and Spurs have released official statements regarding the move.

Defoe, who has played over 250 games and scored 142 goals for Spurs, said: “Everybody knows how much this club means to me, I will play my heart out until my last kick.”

“I have had a fantastic time here and the fans have always been amazing to me,” added Defoe.

“I am grateful for the opportunity for myself and my family to experience living overseas and for me to play in the MLS with a contract that will take me to the age of 35. I have no doubt I shall be coming back as a fan supporting the team in the years to come too.”

Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood added: “This is a great opportunity and one that Jermain wishes to pursue.”

Crew signs Homegrown Players Ross Friedman and Matt Walker

0

The Columbus Crew today announced that it has signed a pair of Homegrown Players: defender Ross Friedman from Harvard University and midfielder Matt Walker from Xavier University. With the signings, the Crew now has seven Homegrown Players on its active roster, tying FC Dallas for the League lead. Per club and MLS policy, terms of the agreements were not disclosed.

“I think these signings are a tribute to our youth development system and the type of players this club and this region are capable of producing,” said Crew Sporting Director and Head Coach Gregg Berhalter. “Matt Walker is a dynamic player that has the ability to turn in tight spaces and take players on one-on-one, and he fits the style that we want to play. Ross Friedman is a versatile player that can play a number of positions and has a tremendous work rate. Both players have good soccer minds, and they are strong additions to the first team.”

Both players were members of the Crew Juniors Super-20 squad that captured the 2011 national title, and Walker was a member of the U-19 McGuire Cup-winning side in 2012. Friedman and Walker join five other Crew Soccer Academy products on the Black & Gold roster, including 2013 returnees Chad Barson, Matt Lampson, Ben Speas, Wil Trapp and Matt Wiet, who signed earlier this offseason. Barson, Lampson, Speas and Trapp set a record for Homegrown Players in an MLS starting lineup when the four took the field together at Real Salt Lake on August 24, 2013.

“To have seven Homegrowns on our first team roster is a great sign that our player development system is working,” said Andrew Arthurs, Crew Senior Vice President of Soccer Business Development and Executive Director of Crew Juniors. “We are very proud of Ross and Matt as they fulfill their dream of becoming professional players. They have both worked extremely hard to reach this point and I know they will do everything they can to make an impact at the next level.”

Friedman, a native of Bexley, Ohio, logged 56 career appearances in four seasons at Harvard, recording two goals and 17 assists. His team-leading six assists as a sophomore earned him a nod for All-Ivy League honorable mention. He nearly doubled his career high assists number his senior season when he dished-out 10 assists and scored one goal in 17 appearances – all of which were starts. During Super-20 Finals play with the Crew’s squad, he was named to back-to-back All-Tournament Teams in 2011 and 2012.

Hailing from Batavia, Ohio, Walker made 79 appearances during his four-year career in Cincinnati at Xavier University. During his tenure as a Musketeer, Walker scored 26 goals and added 24 assists, posting double-digit goal and assist numbers as a junior before finishing his senior season with nine goals and seven assists. In 2011, Walker was named Crew Soccer Academy’s Under-19/20 Player of the Year.

West Bromwich Albion appoint Mel.

0

West Bromwich Albion have appointed former Real Betis manager Pepe Mel as head coach on an eighteen month rolling contract at the Hawthorns.

The 50 year old Spanish manager has been chosen as the long term successor to Steve Clarke.

Mel lead Real Betis to their highest ever La Liga finish last season, as he guided the Andalucian side to an impressive seventh position, as Betis qualified for the Europa League.

Mel, who like Clarke, over achieved with his side last season, was unable to replicate last season’s fortunes, and was sacked from his job in October, after a heavy 4-0 defeat in the derby fixture against Seville sealed his fait, as Betis languished at the bottom of La Liga.

Clarke was sacked by the Baggies in December following a defeat against Cardiff City, and Albion took their time in finding his successor.

The sporting and technical director Richard Garlick said on the club’s official website:

“I’m delighted to welcome Pepe to the club.

“His appointment concludes an extensive recruitment process during which we have cast the net far and wide to identify the most suitable candidate to take the club forward.

“Pepe was a strong contender from the outset due to his impressive achievements and has emerged as our No1 candidate.

“He is a forward thinking coach whose teams are renowned for playing an attractive and positive style of football.”

Garlick added: “The board is extremely grateful to Keith, the coaching staff and players for their efforts over the past month, which has yielded six points from four unbeaten league games.

“Keith will have an important role to play in supporting Pepe as he coaches in England for the first time.”

Albion are currently in 14th position in the Premier League, just four points outside the bottom three.

Mel has met his players, and will take charge of the Baggies in their Premier League fixture away at Southampton.

Dwayne De Rosario signs on for second stint with Toronto FC

0

Toronto FC announced Thursday that they have completed the signing of midfielder Dwayne De Rosario following his selection in Stage 2 of the MLS Re-Entry draft process last month.

The news marks a second homecoming for De Rosario, 35, who joined his hometown club in 2008 after making his name with the San Jose Earthquakes and Houston Dynamo, only to be traded to New York in April 2011. He found himself on the move again less than three months later, joining D.C. United, where he netted 23 goals and 21 assists in 68 MLS matches and was named the 2011 MLS MVP and MLS Golden Boot recipient on the strength of a 13-goal, 12-assist season.

Last season the Canadian international appeared in 24 matches for United, scoring three goals and adding two assists.

“Dwayne’s resume speaks for itself,” said Toronto FC general manager Tim Bezbatchenko in a statement. “The addition of an MLS veteran with regular season and MLS Cup MVP honors brings a significant piece to the team we are building here at Toronto FC. Dwayne’s impact will add considerable skill and depth to our squad and we look forward to having him serve as a mentor to our younger players.

“Dwayne has had a tremendous MLS and national team career. He has very strong ties to the team and the city and it is only fitting that this is how his story should unfold.”

De Rosario has been a member of four MLS Cup winning sides – twice with the San Jose Earthquakes (2001 and 2003) and twice with the Houston Dynamo (2006 and 2007) – earning MLS Cup MVP honors in 2001 and 2007. In all, has made 324 appearances in 13 MLS seasons with 103 goals and 77 assists, and has been named to the MLS Best XI six times (2005-07, 2009-11).

The Scarborough, Ontario, native originally joined Toronto FC via a trade with the Dynamo on December 12, 2008. He appeared in 57 games over two-plus seasons with TFC, leading the team in scoring in 2009 with 11 goals and in 2010 with a franchise single-season best 15 goals.

On April 8, 2010, he was named the second captain in team history and later that season he helped lead the Reds to their first CONCACAF Champions League berth. He remains Toronto’s all-time career leader in goals (27), multi-goal games (five), game-winning goals (seven), shots (158) and tied for first in assists (10).

A four-time Canadian Player of the Year (2005, 2006, 2007 and 2011), De Rosario has a total of 77 caps for Canada and is the team’s all-time leading goalscorer with 20.
