Liverpool defender Daniel Agger ignoring exit rumours

0

Speculation continues to suggest that the Denmark international could soon be on his way out of Anfield.

Liverpool are currently well-stocked at centre-half and it has been reported that one of their more high-profile performers may look to move on.

Napoli, under the guidance of former Reds boss Rafa Benitez, have been heavily linked with Agger and his club colleague Martin Skrtel.

Agger insists there is no substance to the rumours, though, and maintains that his sole focus at present is on returning to full fitness.

He told Danish publication Jyllands-Posten: “I’m not thinking about moving at the moment, not at all.

“I’ve only seen what the papers say and I can’t really do anything about it. There is no reason to believe these rumours.”

On his latest injury setback, a calf strain suffered up against Oldham Athletic in FA Cup competition on Sunday, Agger said: “It is what it is. I’ve been unlucky at the wrong times, but that’s football.

“When you have so many great players, then someone else will play when you are not at the top of your form.”

Liverpool have been on top of their game this season, sitting six points off the pace in the Premier League title race, and Agger is confident the Reds can maintain that challenge.

He said: “There is a much different atmosphere in the dressing room.

“It’s like we truly believe that we are going to win and that is not something that we have done in the last couple of years.

“We are winning games, playing some great football and scoring a lot of goals. We’ve proven that we can challenge and then we have a guy up front (Luis Suarez) who scores goals from time to time.”

Lionel Messi dismisses exit reports

0

FC Barcelona midfielder Lionel Messi has dismissed reports suggesting that he is looking for a move away from the club, and has revealed his intentions are to retire at the Nou Camp.

Speculation has been high in recent weeks after it was revealed that the Argentine had a falling out with one of the officials at the Catalan club, after he labelled him as a business-man rather than a football-man.

With a rift reported, it was then reported that mega-rich Paris Saint Germain were plotting a bid of over ÂŁ200million for the La Liga star, but after returning from injury last night, Messi confirmed himself that he doesn’t ever want to leave Barca.

“I want to retire here. While people want me, I want to spend my whole career at FC Barcelona,” said Messi.

“My excitement to play is always there but it is true that these past two months have been difficult.

“Mentally I’m rested. I’m happy, very excited and very eager to achieve things.

“I’m here to add to the team, to help the team achieve its goals. Very difficult months are ahead but we will fight like we always have at this club.”

D.C. United signs Homegrown defender Jalen Robinson

D.C. United today announced that the club has signed 19-year-old Academy product and former Wake Forest player Jalen Robinson. The defender is the seventh Homegrown player in United’s history, joining 2010 MLS Rookie of the Year Andy Najar, goalkeeper and U.S. international Bill Hamid, defender Conor Shanosky, defender Ethan White, forward Michael Seaton and midfielder Collin Martin.

“Jalen is one of the most athletic players in all of college soccer who can play center back or right back,” said D.C. United General Manager Dave Kasper. “He is very composed on the ball as he looks to play out of the back, and he also excels at one on one defending.”

“Jalen is a modern defender,” said D.C. United Director of Youth Development Sonny Silooy. “He is physical, fast and a smart soccer player that can play in different positions on the back line. We are excited to see another Academy player sign with our first team.”

David Moyes confident he can turn Manchester United around

0

It has been a testing campaign for the Scot – his first in the Old Trafford hot-seat since agreeing to succeed the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson.

Demoralising setbacks have been suffered on an alarmingly regular basis, with home performances in particular offering cause for concern.

A reversal on the road at Sunderland on Tuesday was United’s third in succession, with Premier League, FA Cup and Capital One Cup headaches being endured.

The one crumb of comfort for the Red Devils is that they have made steady progress in the UEFA Champions League, but Moyes remains confident that domestic fortunes will improve while there is still time to put things right.

The Scot said in the Daily Mirror: “I’ve been here before and done it before.

“I just sense it’s on the verge of turning, that we’re about to get a bit better. You need a bit of good fortune to go for you, and it looks as if we’re not getting enough of that at the moment.

“I can sense in the dressing room that there’s an urge to fight our current position.

“It’s part of football management. It’s never going to be an easy ride.

“To be the manager of Manchester United is a big challenge, whether it’s on the back of wins or defeats.”

Madrid forced to give Alonso ÂŁ1.6m pay rise

0

The 32-year-old’s new two-year deal signed on Wednesday will see his net salary rise from £3.3million to £4.95million and mean he now sees out his European career in the Spanish capital before one last lucrative payday in the MLS.

But Alonso had all but decided to leave Real Madrid as the club dragged its feet over a new deal, incredibly allowing the former Liverpool midfielder to run into the last six months of his contract.

Paris Saint Germain were willing to pay him ÂŁ8.25million a season with an ÂŁ8.25million signing on fee, while Chelsea, Manchester City and Juventus had taken an interest in his situation.

But despite the prospect of earning more money elsewhere Alonso was persuaded by Real coach Carlo Ancelotti to think again about leaving the club.

Alonso had to have surgery on a pubis problem in the summer and had ruled out a romantic return to England because he felt the pace of La Liga or Serie A better suited his stage of career.

His head had been turned by Juventus where his Spain international team-mate Fernando Llorente plays but he told Madrid that if they made the financial commitment he would give them the last years of his career.

Under pressure from supporters and Ancelotti, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has given in with a two-year deal that also offers a third season if both parties are happy to sign until 2017.

Forget the Premier League, I grew up watching ‘ridiculous’ Rivaldo

0

While most of today’s young professionals will have grown up watching the Premier League, the 24-year-old spent his formative years studying La Liga.

And playmaker Rivaldo, a World Cup winner with Brazil in 2002 and a star in Spain for Barcelona and Deportivo, was his favourite player.

‘When I was 13 I didn’t want to go out with my mates – I’d stay in and watch La Liga instead,’ Sturridge told FourFourTwo magazine.

‘Seeing Zidane, Ronaldinho and Ronaldo producing their magic week in, week out was a real buzz.

‘I’ve always studied the best Brazilians. I used to watch videos of Pele and loved seeing Rivaldo at Barcelona. I’m left-footed like he is, so I always tried to pick up bits from his game.

‘I remember that great overhead kick he scored against Manchester United in the Champions League. There was another one too, against Valencia in La Liga.

‘That one was from the edge of the box in the last minute and clinched his hat-trick. It was ridiculous. He was a top player.’

Sturridge has been out since late November with damaged ankle ligaments but could make his Liverpool return on Sunday at Stoke after resuming training this week.

The former Chelsea and Manchester City man has scored nine goals in 12 Premier League appearances this season.

Bayern spend ÂŁ75,000 to knock ÂŁ25 off cost of tickets for Arsenal Champions League tie

0

The defending champions received 18,000 applications for just 2,974 tickets for the round of 16, first leg match at the Emirates on February 19.

But because tickets cost £62 (€75) each, significantly more expensive than the average German prices, Bayern are to pay £24.80 (€30) towards the cost of each one as a goodwill gesture.

In a message posted on the club’s website on Wednesday, they said: ‘For the 2,974 tickets made available by Arsenal, we have received 18,000 orders. The ticket price asked by Arsenal is ÂŁ62 (€75) each.

‘The terrific support of the fans lifted Bayern [last year]. Particularly noteworthy is the large number of Bayern fans who not only supported the highlights, but were at every game.

‘The fact is that this loyalty at such a high number of games does not only take up a great deal of time, but it also tears a big hole in the wallet.’

It continues: ‘Bayern has therefore decided to subsidise the tickets for the away game at Arsenal with nearly €90,000.

‘Thus every Bayern fan who buy a ticket for the game in London on February 19 will pay only €45 (instead of the regular €75).

‘This is intended as a small thank you for your great support in 2013

Bayern won the Bundesliga title and the German Cup in addition to the Champions League, where they beat Borussia Dortmund 2-1 in the final at Wembley.

The near-3,000 Bayern fans who travel over to London will hope for a repeat of last year’s first leg at the same stage of the competition, when Bayern dominated and won 3-1.

Although Arsenal won the second leg in the Allianz Arena 2-0, they went out on the away goals rule.

Tickets for the second leg of the Arsenal tie, at the Allianz on March 11, tickets are priced from ÂŁ12 to ÂŁ50.

The gesture is just the latest example of how German football clubs lead the way in treatment of their fans.

Season tickets and matchday prices are considerably lower in the Bundesliga than the Premier League, with access to top flight games costing as little as ÂŁ10.

The cheapest Bayern season ticket, for a place on the safe standing section behind the goal, costs just ÂŁ104.

Neatly summing up the differences between English and German attitudes, the Bayern president Uli Hoeness went on record in 2012 to say: ‘We could charge more than ÂŁ104. Let’s say we charged ÂŁ300. We’d get ÂŁ2million more in income but what’s ÂŁ2m to us?

‘In a transfer discussion you argue about that sum for five minutes. But the difference between ÂŁ104 and ÂŁ300 is huge for the fan.

‘We do not think the fans are like cows, who you milk. Football has got to be for everybody.

‘That’s the biggest difference between us and England.’

Borussia Dortmund interested in Arsenal starlet

0

Arsenal starlet Serge Gnabry is being closely monitored by German giants Borussia Dortmund as they look to strengthen their side ahead of losing striker Robert Lewandowski in the Summer.

Dortmund will lose their Polish hitman to fierce-rivals Bayern Munich once this season ends, and he will become their second key player to swap Dortmund for Munich as Mario Gotze completed the same move last season.

However, the officials at Dortmund have promised manager Jurgen Klopp that there will be funds to spend in the Summer and it has been reported that Arsenal teenager, Serge Gnabry is one of those being closely watched by Klupp and his scouting team.

The 18-year-old is yet another exciting prospect coming through the Arsenal ranks under Arsene Wenger, but with Gnabry being German, a move to the Bundesliga could be on the cards for the winger.

Barca forward Antonio Sanabria says he is set to join Roma

0

The Paraguayan international had refused to sign a new deal at the Nou Camp.

The 17-year-old is yet to make his full debut for Barcelona, having joined their youth set-up in 2009 – but he has now opted to move to Italy.

“Roma already put the necessary money to the Spanish Federation for the clause asked by Barcelona”, Sanabria told Radio Monumental 1080 AM.

Sanabria revealed that he will not link-up with Roma’s first team until next summer as he is set to join another club on loan.

“I’ll go on loan to another Serie A team,” he added.

West Ham United fans funny chants from last night

0

Despite seeing their side lose 6-0 at the Etihad Stadium last night, West Ham United fans have been the talk of the town this morning after some of their humerous chants from last night’s game have been going around social media.

The Hammers fans have had a torrid time of late, and after being thrashed 5-0 by Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup, they wouldn’t have expected much when they travelled to the Etihad Stadium, but in fact, the side went one worse and lost 6-0.

Although they were watching their players all-but give up during the game, all the noise was coming from the away end, and some of their chants were just comedy gold.

Here are a selection of the chants that were sung by the faithful of West Ham United.

‘Youre nothing special, we lose every week’

‘We’re f*cking stupid, we come every week’

‘We make children cry, we make children cryyy, we’re West Ham United, we make children cry’

‘If I cry can I have a box’

*2 mins in* “nil nil to the Cockney Boys”

“8 months ’til Millwall, 8 months ’til Millwall”

Some great humour shown by the West Ham fans during this tough time.

Nicklas Bendtner makes early injury return

0

The Denmark striker picked up the problem during the Gunners’ victory over Cardiff on New Year’s Day – and was expected to be out for between four and six weeks.

But reports now suggest that Bendtner has recovered much quicker than expected, and is now only a matter of days away from being back involved in training.

The news will no doubt delight Wenger, who was looking at possible options in the transfer window with Bendtner joining Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott in being out of action.

However, with Bendtner now looking like being back fit quickly, Wenger may opt to shelve his plans to bring in another forward.

United players raise concerns over David Moyes credentials

0

David Moyes faces a fight to convince several senior Manchester United players of his credentials following the dismal form that has resulted in three consecutive defeats for the first time in 13 years.

The Guardian can reveal that some within the dressing room are unsure of Moyes’s ability to reverse a sequence that includes a league defeat by Tottenham Hotspur, being knocked out of the FA Cup by Swansea City, and Tuesday’s 2-1 loss at Sunderland in the League Cup semi-final, first leg.

The Football Association, in addition, is looking into Moyes’s remark after the tie at Sunderland that we are “playing referees as well as the opposition”. The manager could face a charge if it is viewed he was commenting on match officials’ fairness.

When Moyes was appointed as Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor at the close of last season he brought in his own coaches – Steve Round, Phil Neville, Chris Woods, and Jimmy Lumsden, and also appointed Ryan Giggs – while discarding the existing backroom staff of RenĂ© Meulensteen, Mike Phelan and Eric Steele.

This move is being privately questioned by some within the squad who were happy working with a group that had helped Ferguson oversee part of the most successful period in United’s history. According to well-placed sources, there is a bemusement among a number of players, with a strong sense forming that as United won the title by 11 points last term there was little need for Moyes to undergo a complete revamp of a set-up that had a proven winning structure.

Moyes has never won a major trophy as a manager and, for some, his record is now under scrutiny, given the team are 11 points behind the leaders, Arsenal, and have scant chance of retaining the title. There is further concern that United may fail to qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 1995-96, with the side in seventh position, five points behind fourth-placed Liverpool.

While there is no sense of a player mutiny at present, this week’s revelation that the club captain, Nemanja Vidic, is exploring leaving this summer, despite United wishing to open discussions over a new deal, is the latest crack in unity.

Before the defeat at Sunderland, in which Vidic scored United’s equaliser, his agent, Silvano Martina, told an Italian radio station: “At the moment, I would rule out an extension [to his contract] with Manchester United.”

Vidic’s disquiet follows Danny Welbeck’s denial of the claim last month by Moyes that the manager had to instruct the striker to be “the last off the training field” in order to improve. Within days the player offered a counter-view. “I have been doing that [extra training] ever since I have been at United,” he said.

Earlier in December Rio Ferdinand publicly questioned Moyes’s policy of naming the team close to a match, rather than the day before, as Ferguson did, stating it could turn the defender “into a madman”.

Moyes’s pursuit of Leighton Baines to replace Patrice Evra has not gone down well either, given the left-back’s popularity in the dressing room. As with Vidic, the Frenchman may consider his options as he is out of contract in the summer.

All of this means that following the loss of the three matches in seven days, some senior players who were serial winners have been left uncertain about the direction of the club under Moyes.

After the defeat at Sunderland Welbeck became the first to voice concern regarding prospects of qualifying for next season’s Champions League. Asked if he could understand why supporters are worried United may finish outside of the top four, he said: “I can understand why fans are concerned. We are not around the Champions League spots at the moment. We need to get our form back and just win the next matches.”

The striker is unsure why after clinching the title last season United are so far adrift of Arsenal. “I cannot pinpoint one thing why this is happening. We were champions last season and we know that the consistency in our game has not been good enough,” said Welbeck. “It is a new experience for us all but the main thing we have to do is look at the next game.”

He did state a determination to start winning games. “It is over 10 years since United lost three games in a row, so we know we have to turn it round and win the next match. The manager is very upbeat. He lets the players know he wants to do really well and the players also want to win games for United,” he said. “Losing three on the bounce is really not good enough and we want to put that right.”

Wilfried Zaha desperate for loan-move this month

0

Manchester United winger Wilfried Zaha is desperate to leave Old Trafford this month on loan as he believes he can make this Summer’s World Cup in Brazil, if given a suitable amount of first-team football.

The former-Crystal Palace ace joined United back in January and was then loaned back to The Eagles to help them secure promotion to the Premier League.

However, since joining The Red Devils, Zaha has only featured three times for the first-team and he is now ready to move away from the club for the rest of the season at least.

With Arsenal star Theo Walcott suffering ligament damage in his knee and being ruled out of the World Cup, Zaha is confident that he can be the man to replace Walcott in Roy Hodgson’s squad, but only if he is given game-time to prove what he can do.
