Arsenal eye up Berbatov & Remy

0

Arsene wenger is contemplating a transfer for Dimitar Berbatov & Loic Remy after the injuries are piling up most recently Nicklas Bendtner & Theo Walcott. Bendtner sprained his ankle after the 2-0 victory over Cardiff City. Wenger doesn’t want any rushed transfers however he is seriously thinking about buying a striker to back up Giroud & Bendtner. Berbatov has been priced at £2m so that has caught the eye of the London side.

The Bulgarian’s contract expires at the end of the season and the Gunners are planning on a 1 year deal for the 32 year old. Recently thought Loic Remy has come into the spotlight after QPR has said that the Frenchman will be up for sale when his loan spell with Newcastle ends. Olivier Giroud was injured and missed the Cardiff game which means that there are no senior strikers available to Arsenal for their upcoming game.

Jermain Defoe’s transfer to Toronto FC nearing completion

0

After featuring in 34 Premier League matches last season, scoring 11 goals and notching three assists, Defoe has been relegated to a substitute role in 2013-14. Of his 12 league appearances, nine of them have a come as a substitute, and he has yet to hit the back of the net.

Those numbers have put the 31-year-old in line for a major transfer to MLS with reports confirming that Toronto has made a big money offer to Defoe as part of club president/CEO Tim Leiweke’s plan to bring a world star to the Canadian franchise.

Despite his poor league form Defoe has proven his quality in Spurs’ Europa League run, where he’s scored seven goals in just five matches, and their Capital One Cup efforts, where he’s scored three goals and added two assists in three matches.

The recent emergence of Emmanuel Adebayor has emerged as another barrier to Defoe’s success at White Hart Lane. Since the sacking of Andre-Villas-Boas, Adebayor has joined Roberto Soldado as Tim Sherwood’s strike-partnership of choice in his favored 4-4-2 formation.

The Togo international has performed well for the Lillywhites yet it remains to be seen what Sherwood would do if Adebayor or Soldado went down.

Assuming Defoe is transferred to Toronto that would leave Spurs with only the two strikers, hardly the stockpile required to survive two cup runs and a domestic competition where the goal is to finish fourth. When Defoe’s move west does go down, look for Tottenham to snap up a new striker to provide cover.

For Toronto, the capture of Defoe would be a major coup for a club still searching for its first MLS playoff run. He will likely partner with Brazilian striker Gilberto, who Toronto signed as a Designated Player on December 13th.

Southampton weigh up £12.5m bid for Cagliari defender Davide Astori

0

Southampton are poised to make a renewed bid for their long-term defensive target, Cagliari’s Davide Astori, according to reports in Italy.

Saints are determined to land the Italy international and will not be deterred by the Sardinian club’s £12.5m valuation of Astori.

The South Coast club have previously spent heavily in the Italian market on the likes of Gaston Ramirez and Pablo Osvaldo, and Mauricio Pochettino is ready to turn to Serie A again in a bid to freshen up a squad who have faltered in recent months.

Although first-choice centre-back pairing Dejan Lovren and Jose Fonte have been solid, Pochettino wants to bring in Astori to provide competition and cover for the duo, with current deputies Jos Hooiveld and Maya Yoshida less than convincing in their appearances this season.

The left-sided Astori has been an outstanding performer for mid-table Cagliari, and he featured for Italy at the Confederations Cup earlier this year. He is expected to contend for a reserve spot in Cesare Prandelli’s World Cup squad this summer.

Despite these impressive credentials, Astori can be inconsistent – he conceded more penalties than any other player in Serie A last season. But Pochettino – himself a centre-back in his playing days – is a long-term admirer of the 26-year-old, and he looks set to make Astori the latest big-name capture of his managerial reign.

“We had quite a lengthy conversation and it is such a shame that we have lost a player of his calibre for the World Cup, he has been incredibly unfortunate and we wish him a speedy recovery.

“Having worked with him for two years as England manager I know the character he has, and I know he will come back even stronger from this setback.”

Manchester United defender set for Summer exit

0

Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic could be set for a Summer exit from Old Trafford after his agent revealed that the centre-back has no intentions of signing a contract extension.

The club-captain only has six months left on his current contract and it has been widely reported that clubs in Serie A are interested in bringing him to Italy.

David Moyes and officials at Old Trafford are desperate to open talks about a new contract with the captain, but his agent, Silvano Martina, has ruled out that possibility.

‘Vidic, given his contract situation, has several teams looking at him.

‘Vidic is a very good player and will have no trouble finding a new club. For the time being we are remaining calm.

‘However, at the moment, I would rule out an extension with Manchester United.’

Dons boss Karl Robinson all but confirmed Rodgers is keen on the midfielder, who has come through the youth ranks at the League One club and has nine caps for England at Under-17 level.

Robinson said: ‘I know Brendan quite well and we speak about different players all the time.

‘There may have been another reason why he was at the game today, but you’ve seen Dele and he’s special. Yeah, he did some silly things but he’s 17 years of age. He did bits of magic too.

‘You don’t see many 17-year-olds playing in an FA Cup third round against a very good Wigan side and not looking out of place.’

Fans’ support has been hugely important to Arsenals German midfielder

0

The German playmaker made an instant impact for the Gunners, providing an assist for Olivier Giroud on his debut against Sunderland before scoring a stunning goal in the Champions League win over Napoli at the beginning of October.

Now Ozil is determined to repay the supporters’ faith by winning a trophy this season.

“It’s hugely important,” he told Arsenall Player. “Not just for me but for the whole team. You can see in the games, be that home or away, they are always there for us and get behind and support the team fervently for 90 minutes.

“We can show our thanks to them through playing successful and attractive football and by getting good results. The team deserve to win a trophy and we will do all we can to celebrate with the fans if that happens.”

Ozil says he has been “satisfied” with his performances so far, but he is confident he can go to another level in the coming months.

“I know what I can do and a footballer always strives for more success,” he said. “My aim is to develop and improve my game here – but the most important thing is that we play successful football as a team and that, at the end of the season, we win trophies.

“You have personal goals – you want to remain healthy and want to play successful football. But like I said, the most important thing is to be successful with this team.”

Walcott will come back better than ever, claims Jenkinson

0

Arsenal right-back Carl Jenkinson believes winger Theo Walcott will come back from his long-term injury a bigger and better player.

The Englishman suffered ligament damage in his knee on Saturday during their clash with Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup Third Round, and after results came back on Monday evening, it was confirmed that the winger will miss six months of action.

The injury leaves Walcott sidelined for the rest of the season and it also means he will miss the World Cup in Brazil, which will be a huge blow for both Roy Hodgson and Walcott himself.

However, speaking to the club’s official website, Jenkinson has given his full support to the winger and believes he will come back a better player.

“If anybody is going to come back better and stronger, it is Theo,” he told Arsenal.com. “He is incredibly focused and mentally he is a very strong character.

“Theo will be fine, I have no doubts about that. I am disappointed that we have lost him for the rest of the season because he is a massive player for us and brings us something unique.

“It is tough to see one of your friends out for a long period of time. You wouldn’t wish it on anybody and it is probably the worst news we have had all season. He had only just come back from a previous injury and had been scoring goals for fun, so from both points of views it it terrible news.

“But Theo is a very strong guy and while it may take a bit of time to take it all in, he will just get on with things and fingers crossed the time flies by, for his sake and for ours.”

Sturridge returns.

0

Liverpool centre forward Daniel Sturridge is set for a return to the Liverpool first team, after missing the clubs last nine fixtures in the League after an injury.

The striker damaged his ankle ligaments during a routine training session on 29th November, and faced several weeks on the sidelines.

But the striker is now back to full fitness and will presumably make his Premier League return in Liverpool’s game away at Stoke City at the Britannia.

It was feared Sturridge would be out for two months but his rehabilitation has gone smoothly, and he passed an intensive outdoor session at Melwood on Monday.
The striker is also yet to resume is partnership with Luis Suarez, as Brendan Rodgers’ men will try and hit the heavy heights of the Champions League, and beyond, with the Mesrseyside club in fine form.

Before the 24-year-old was ruled out, Sturridge had combined with Suarez to score 14 goals in seven Barclays Premier League games.

And with Liverpool playing several of their rivals in the next few weeks, wins are needed.

His return is also good news for England after the recent shock over the long-term injury to Theo Walcott, who has recently suffered a knee cruciate injury.

Sturrisge signed for the Reds last January, and has been a constant performer for his side.

2016 Copa America tournament in USA still in the works

0

Spanish outlet Marca has added more fuel to the fire by reporting that CONMEBOL is still finalizing plans with CONCACAF to host a special edition of the quadrennial tournament in 2016 to commemorate its 100-year anniversary.

Marca has also allegedly identfied six stadiums where games will be played: the Rose Bowl, Stanford Stadium, MetLife Stadium, Florida Citrus Bowl, RFK Stadium and Reliant Stadium.

Most of the other details in the report have already been cited, including that the 16-team tournament will see the US, Mexico and four other CONCACAF representatives compete with South America’s 10 nations (El Tri and Japan are reportedly the guest teams for the 2015 Copa América in Chile).

But Marca also states that the competition will be called the “Centenario” and that no specfic dates have yet been agreed upon, as an agreement still needs to be made with the company that owns the TV rights.

The Copa América is the oldest international contintental soccer competition. It was first played in 1916 in Uruguay, who are the current champons after winning the 2011 edition vs. Paraguay and hold the most tournament wins with 15.

CONCACAF declined to comment when contacted by MLSsoccer.com, but a source close to the confederation confirmed that talks are ongoing between CONCACAF and CONMEBOL, though added the Marca report was “premature.”

Oxlade Chamberlain fit again.

0

Arsenal have been handed a boost regarding one of their better players, with Alex Oxlade Chamberlain returning to full fitness, and availible for selection.

The news comes as a welcomed distraction for Arsene Wenger, following the unfortunate Cruciate Knee Ligament suffered by Theo Walcott, which overshadowed the 2-0 win in Saturday’s FA Cup game against Tottenham.

Oxlade-Chamberlain has not played since suffering a knee injury on the opening day of the season more than four months ago but is now back training with the Gunners squad, who sit top of the Premier League at the current moment.

Oxlade-Chamberlain is regarded by Wenger as a potential replacement to Walcott on the right of Arsenal’s midfield, with youngster Serg Gnabry another possible option for Wenger.

Gnabry is most likely to have a run in the Arsenal first team, after impressing for the Gunners in recent weeks.

The 18 year-old impressed hugely against Tottenham on Saturday and says that he has benefitted from training with Walcott.

“I have learned a lot from Theo – we both are intelligent players,” said Gnabry.

Walcott looks set to miss up to Six months of game time, as the winger will miss the World Cup Finals.

Gunners midfielder Mikel Arteta feels Gnabry can step up to the plate in Walcott’s absence.

“He’s got something not many players have in this team which is pace, skill to go and beat people,” said Arteta.

“He’s like a little boxer, he’s a little fighter. I think the Premier League this year is the most difficult one since the Premier League has existed. I think we’re fine with what we’ve got. Whether it is enough is not we won’t know until the end because sometimes you get injuries, sometimes you get lucky and you don’t need anyone because you have enough players to rotate.”

Arsenal travel to Aston Villa over the weekend, looking to build upon their recent form.
