0

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed that striker Lukas Podolski could miss up to 10 weeks of action after suffering a hamstring injury on Tuesday night.

The German international made a lenghty run down the line just after half-time at the Emirates Stadium and after crossing the ball, he fell to the ground holding his hamstring.

After the game, Wenger admitted that the injury is bad and will keep the German out for around three weeks, but in his latest press conference, Wenger has now admitted that the 28-year-old could miss up to 10-weeks of action.

Wenger said: ‘It is bad news about Lukas Podolski as he will be out for eight to 10 weeks. His hamstring is much more damaged than we thought at the start. It is very disappointing and we have paid a very heavy price for that win [over Fenerbahce]. We have to be patient now’.

Steven Gerrard: ‘Liverpool can be title contenders’

0

Liverpool captain and midfielder Steven Gerrard believes this season could be their best chance of challenging for the title.

With two wins from two, coming against Stoke City and Aston Villa, The Reds will now play host to Manchester United at Anfield and if they manage to pick up all three points on Sunday, they will go five points clear of United already, who have won one and drawn one.

Despite finishing last season in 7th place, Gerrard believes the current squad at Anfield is good enough to close to gap on the likes of United, Manchester City and Chelsea.

“That’s something we have been trying to do for a long time, not just with changes in the summer,” Gerrard told the Liverpool Echo.

“For a long time, the gap between ourselves and United, Chelsea and now Manchester City has been too big.

“Each year we have been trying to close that gap, so really this season isn’t any different in that respect.

“But it does feel slightly different this year. The team spirit is really good and there is a belief within the squad.

“The changes the manager has made during the summer are really positive and hopefully there are still one or two more players to come in.”

Sunderland In Battle With Rennes For M’Bengue

0

Both Sunderland and Rennes are looking to sign Toulouse defender Cheikh M’Bengue from Toulouse, Rennes are looking to sign a new left-back whilst Sunderland boss Paolo Di Canio wants to reinforce that position is his squad.

M’Bengue only has one year left on his contract and has refused to sign an extention with the French outfit, this has forced Toulouse to listen to offers for the 25 year old Senegal international.

Sunderland however have a tough job in bringing M’Bengue to the Premier League as he has spent 17 years with Toulouse and is settled in France. Rennes are believed to have the upper hand currently but don’t rule Paolo Di Canio out of gaining the defenders signature.

Cheikh M’Bengue has made 137 appearances for Toulouse scoring 2 goals.

Hernandez Next AVB Target

0

Tottenham look set to make a shock move for Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez but United have slapped a ÂŁ15 million price tag on the Mexican international.

The Mexican has struggled to get a regular place in the United side and looks to be third choice striker under new boss David Moyes. Tottenham are in the hunt for a finisher with Jermain Defoe seemingly looking to be close to an exit from the North-London club. Defoe is being chased by several clubs both in the Premier League and the Championship.

United are not looking to sell Hernandez but if a large bid where to come in his spell at Old Trafford could come to an end. Spurs looks set to try and aquire the striker for around ÂŁ7-8 million but United want double that.

If United were to sell Hernandez, Moyes would have to be alert to assess whether he would need to buy an extra striker himself for depth.

Hernandez signed for Manchester United from Guadalajara in 2010 for ÂŁ6 million making 77 apearances and scoring 33 times.

Wayne Rooney thanks United supporters

0

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has taken to social networking site Facebook, to thank the supports of the club for the reception they gave him at Old Trafford on Monday night.

The English champions came up against Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea, who have been after Rooney all summer, and the striker was met with a warm reception as he started his first game of the new season.

The 27-year-old admitted to wanting to leave Old Trafford earlier in the year and was also keen on the switch to Stamford Bridge, but after the game, it was revealed that the Englishman has no plans on leaving United now and he rejected the chance to hand in a formal transfer request.

After the game, Rooney put on his official Facebook page: ‘Here’s some pictures from Monday night’s game. It was an unbelievable reaction from the fans, so thank you.

‘I really appreciate your support. It means a lot.’

Ironically, during the game, Chelsea fans were chanting ‘Wayne Rooney, we’ll see you next week’, but now it seems that the next time they will see him, will be when United play Chelsea again later on in the season.

CONFIRMED: Mathieu Flamini re-joins Arsenal

0

Arsenal Football Club have re-signed midfielder Mathieu Flamini after the Frenchman was released by Italian side AC Milan.

The 29-year-old, who left Arsenal in order to join Milan a few years ago, has been training with the English club over the summer to regain fitness, but manager Arsene Wenger was so impressed with Flamini’s work ethic and performances, that he has actually re-signed the midfielder.

It is believed that the Frenchman has been offered a three-year deal worth around ÂŁ40k-a-week and he has become the second free agent signed by Wenger this summer.

Earlier on, the Arsenal boss secured the signing of Yaya Sanogo from Auxerre and despite promising money would be spent, so far, Wenger has spent nothing.

It is not unusual for a player to return to his old club, especially at the Emirates Stadium, as Flamini is now the fourth player to come back to The Gunners after leaving.

Sol Campbell, Jens Lehmann and Thierry Henry all made second stints at the club.

We’re still better than Tottenham, insists Theo Walcott

0

Arsenal winger Theo Walcott insists that The Gunners are still better than fierce-rivals Tottenham Hotpsur despite their mega-spending this summer.

Spurs have spent ÂŁ43million on Paulinho and Roberto Soldado from Corinthians and Valencia respectively, as well as about to complete a ÂŁ30million move for Roma’s Erik Lamela, whilst Arsenal have spent nothing so far this summer.

Andre Villas-Boas has also signed midfield duo Etienne Capoue and Nacer Chadli and their team finally has the depth that it has lacked in previous years.

However, Walcott believes that despite the mega-money being spent by the White Hart Lane, Arsenal are still the better team in North London.

When asked if Tottenham are stronger, he replied: ‘Not at all. I feel we’re very, very strong.

‘Everyone makes out our squad is very weak and there are not many of us, but we showed in the last few games that we can bounce back from a bad result, proving a lot of people wrong.

‘Every club is different and Tottenham invested their money very well. For us players we just want to do a job on Sunday, we don’t care if they have brought in ÂŁ30million stars.

‘They have some very good players and a very good manager, but we need to make sure we focus on ourselves. The way we’re playing at the moment we believe we can beat anyone.

‘Tottenham is a massive game and I always enjoy these derbies. The fans make it very special.

‘It’s very early in the season considering there is an England game coming up, but us players love it and it’s a fixture I always look at straight away.

‘Tottenham are playing very good stuff at the moment but we are looking very sharp so for the neutral it’s going to be a pretty impressive spectacle.’

FULL INTERVIEW WITH WILLIAN

0

Chelsea completed the signing of Willian for ÂŁ32million on Wednesday and the Brazilian gave his first full interview as a Blues player. Below you can read the full transcript from his first ever interview as a Premier League player.

What does it feel like to be a Chelsea player?

I’ve always been following Chelsea and every time I came to London I would try to see a Chelsea game and see how the team was doing because it’s been my dream to come to play here. Finally it’s become a reality, and when the offer came I never gave a thought to anybody else, I said to myself that I would run here, and I’m happy to be here now. Chelsea was always my first choice.

You must be looking forward to working under one of the best managers in the game?

Absolutely, it’s going to be an immense pleasure to work with Jose Mourinho, listen to him and learn from him. I’m sure I’m going to grow as a professional and I’m looking forward to training. He’s one of the best coaches in the world with everything he’s won. I’m sure I’m going to learn a lot and improve a lot.

Have you had a chance to speak to Jose Mourinho about what is expected of you?

I’ve had a quick chat with him, he welcomed me to the club and told me he was happy that I was here. He told me to work hard. He said we have a very strong team but when you work hard there are rewards.

You have played in Russia, Ukraine and Brazil, but how familiar are you with the Premier League?

I’ve always followed the Premier League on the television and I’ve always had a desire to play in England because it’s one of the best leagues in the world. I’ve seen some games live and I’ve been to the stadiums. It’s a different league but I’m really looking forward to getting started.

Chelsea fans will remember you for the two goals you scored at Stamford Bridge in the Champions League last season, but how would you describe your style of play?

My style is that I like to dribble a lot and play with speed. I like to accelerate very fast with the ball. I’m also quite technical, I like to shoot at goal but I’ve also learnt to defend, which is something you have to do to help the team.

You have an impressive record in the Champions League, scoring nine goals in 34 appearances. What is your favourite memory from playing in the competition?

The most beautiful goal I scored in the Champions League was for Shakhtar against Roma in a 3-0 win in 2011. I’ve scored memorable goals in other competitions as well but in the Champions League I would choose that one.

As well as Chelsea, you’ve also played against Arsenal, Tottenham, Fulham and Newcastle in the past. How do you remember your matches against English opposition?

It was a great experience because English teams are very difficult to play against and each one has their own qualities. I remember losing against Fulham with Shakhtar, and we also lost 3-2 to Chelsea last season, but they were good experiences and I enjoyed the games.

At Shakhtar you won a number of trophies, including the Ukrainian title, Ukrainian Cup and UEFA Cup. How do you think that winning mentality will help you at a club which have become accustomed to success?

It will help me because every player has a wish to win everything they are competing for. I’ve won a lot of trophies in Ukraine, which is a wonderful feeling, but Chelsea are a great club who are used to winning trophies. My aim is to help Chelsea keep this winning mentality and to win as many trophies as we can. All we want is to win trophies and be successful.

What are your aims for the season, both on an individual and collective level?

I intend to help the team as much as I can in order to be successful. I want to train hard, work hard and give everything to earn my place in the side. This is a very strong team with great players. I hope I am going to start matches very strongly and help the team do the best we can, whether that’s through scoring goals, creating chances or defending. I’m sure with the squad we have we will have a great season ahead of us with many trophies to come.

With the World Cup in your home country to come at the end of the season, are you hoping your performances for Chelsea can help you earn a place in the Brazil squad?

That is definitely another aim of mine, to win my place in the squad and go to the World Cup. I will have to work hard for Chelsea to show what I am capable of, and I’m sure if I do that I will have the opportunity to be called up by the national team as a consequence. That applies to every player; if you work hard and perform well for your club, you will get those opportunities, and if the chance arrives I want to be ready to take it with both hands.

Tottenham boss admits Gareth Bale is close to exit

0

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas has admitted that winger Gareth Bale is close to joining Spanish giants Real Madrid after months of speculation.

The winger has been wanted by Madrid since the start of the summer and after plenty or reports and plenty of tapping up, it finally looks like they are set to sign their most-wanted target.

The La Liga giants are prepared to offer Spurs ÂŁ86million for the Welshman, which will beat the transfer fee record which is currently ÂŁ80million, also spent by Madrid when they signed Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United.

Reports broke out yesterday that Bale was furious with Spurs and even refused to turn up to training and now the manager has confirmed that he is close to leaving White Hart Lane.

Villas-Boas said: “He is involved in a big transfer move to Real Madrid and in the end if it happens, we wish him all the best – what he left here was great memories. But the fact that he hasn’t turned up is not the correct behaviour.

“That is the position they (Bale and his representatives) chose to take and it’s up to the club to decide if it’s a fineable offence.”

Despite not turning up to the training ground, AVB refused to blame Bale for the whole transfer saga.

“No – I think he obviously had a great season. What is happening is a dream move for him.

“In the end there will be a three-way agreement. Tottenham will accept the biggest deal in world football. In the end I think, if Tottenham accepts it and everything goes all right it will be the end of the story.”

Manchester City closing in on ÂŁ3.5million defender

0

Manchester City are closing in on signing Atletico Madrid defender Martin Demichelis, despite the Argentine joining the club just a few months ago after leaving Malaga on a free transfer.

The former Bayern Munich defender played under City boss Manuel Pellegrini during their Malaga days and he also left the club when the Chilean manager did, but it appears that they could be ready for an early surprise reunion.

Demichelis left Malaga for Madrid on a free transfer earlier this summer, but after a defensive crisis has hit the Etihad Stadium, Pellegrini is desperate to land a new centre-back and his attentions are now firmly focused on the Argentine.

City are currently without Vincent Kompany and Mateja Nastasic, so it is thought that Demichelis will provide much needed depth to the team.

Arsenal Want Krul

0

Reports indicate Arsenal are preparing to make a shock move for Newcastle United goalkeeper Tim Krul, the north london giants have already had a 10-12million pound offer rejected for Newcastle Midfielder Yohan Cabaye and a bid for another one of Alan Pardrews players will only irritate him even more.

Arsenal have had links with Tim Krul before, especially back in July when it was reported that Wenger sees Krul as a goalkeeper he can trust for many years and challenge the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City, recent in-form Wojciech Szczesny has had no real competition his whole career and Tim Krul would do a great job of providing that.

Kruls current contract with Newcastle runs out in 2017 and it is reported a bid of around 10million is what Arsenal will be offering.

Do you think Tim Krul would be a good addition to the current Arsenal squad?

New Chelsea signing Willian has revealed how delighted he is to have signed for the Premier League outfit and he has hailed the club as one of the best in the world.
