Who was the first woman Wimbledon champion?

The first-ever Wimbledon ladies’ singles champion was Maud Edith Eleanor Watson, who made history in 1884 at age 19. A talented all-rounder with an overarm serve, she triumphed over her sister Lilian 6–8, 6–3, 6–3 in the inaugural final.

Born to the vicar of Berkswell, she competed in a modest field of 13 and played elegantly in corsets and petticoats. Watson defended her crown in 1885 and was not only a pioneer of women’s tennis but also later served as a nurse during World War I .

Number 1 seed Wimbledon 2026

The 2025 Wimbledon Championships crowned new champions in both singles draws, but the journey began with top seeds carrying the weight of expectation.

Jannik Sinner entered as the ATP World No. 1 and men’s top seed, while Aryna Sabalenka held the WTA No. 1 ranking and women’s top seeding.

Their paths highlighted tennis’s evolving landscape—Sinner advanced to his first Wimbledon final, cementing his status among the elite, while Sabalenka’s quest ended dramatically in the semifinals against eventual finalist Amanda Anisimova.

This year also witnessed unprecedented chaos early on, with 13 men’s seeds toppled in the first round—a grim Open Era record for Wimbledon—underscoring the tour’s deepening competitive intensity.

Here are the current women’s and men’s no. 1 seeds at Wimbledon 2026.

Who is the men’s no. 1 seed at Wimbledon?

Jannik Sinner, the 23-year-old Italian, carried the No. 1 seeding into Wimbledon 2025, backed by his ATP ranking and a stellar season.

His campaign was historic: a semifinal victory over Novak Djokovic propelled him into the final, making him the youngest player in the Open Era to reach four consecutive major finals.

Sinner’s precision power game thrived on grass, dismantling opponents with explosive forehands and agile court coverage.

His presence in the final against Carlos Alcaraz marked only the third time in history that the ATP’s top two seeds clashed in three major finals in a single season—a testament to his meteoric rise. Watch & Bet on Tennis =>

Who is women’s no. 1 seed at Wimbledon?

Aryna Sabalenka, the Belarusian powerhouse, entered as the women’s top seed after a dominant clay and grass swing. Her raw power and aggressive baseline game made her a favorite, but her journey was fraught with tension.

She narrowly survived a third-round thriller against Britain’s Emma Raducanu, saving multiple set points in a gripping 7-6(6), 6-4 battle.

Sabalenka’s run halted abruptly in the semifinals against Amanda Anisimova, denying her a chance at a maiden Wimbledon title.

Despite the loss, her consistent deep runs reinforced her status as a premier force, especially after earlier upsets decimated the top seeds, including Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula in Round.

What seed is Djokovic at Wimbledon?

Novak Djokovic’s high rating and supremacy on grass courts have made him one of the top seeds at Wimbledon. Djokovic was ranked No. 2 at Wimbledon 2025, behind only Jannik Sinner in first place.

Given his numerous Wimbledon victories and Center Court expertise, Djokovic was still a serious contender even though he wasn’t the top seed. ATP rankings prior to the tournament are reflected in the seeding; however, Djokovic is frequently a favourite regardless of seed because of his track record. Watch & Bet on Tennis =>

What seed is Berrettini at Wimbledon?

Matteo Berrettini, the 2021 Wimbledon finalist, was seeded 32nd—a sharp decline from his peak but a nod to his grass-court prowess.

Injuries had plagued his recent seasons, yet his powerful serve and forehand made him a dangerous floater.

His campaign ended early, however, falling in the first round amid the mass exodus of seeds. Berrettini’s struggle mirrored the fates of other grass specialists in a draw defined by unpredictability.

Who was number 1 seed at Wimbledon 2026?

Who was number 1 seed at Wimbledon 2025?

In 2025, Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka held the top seeds. Sinner, then a seven-time champion, aimed to tie Roger Federer’s record of eight titles but withdrew before the tournament due to injury.

Swiatek, fresh off her fourth Roland Garros title, sought her first Wimbledon crown but fell short.

Their absences in the 2025 finals underscored tennis’s relentless turnover—Sinner and Alcaraz now headline the men’s rivalry, while Swiatek returned as the eighth seed to reach her first Wimbledon final.

What’s the lowest seed to win Wimbledon?

An unseeded player is the lowest seed to win Wimbledon. Marketa Vondrousova became the first unseeded woman to win the Ladies’ Singles in 2023, while unseeded Boris Becker (1985) and Goran Ivanišević (2001) won the Gentlemen’s Singles.

When Boris Becker won in 1985, he was 17 years old and rated 20th. In 2001, Goran Ivanišević, rated 125th, entered as a wildcard.

When Marketa Vondrousova won in 2023, she was rated 42nd, marking her the sole unseeded and lowest-ranked female winner in the Open Era.

Although the question expressly requests seeding, Mark Edmondson (ranked 212th) is typically regarded as the lowest-ranked male player to win a Grand Slam, even if this was not at Wimbledon. Watch & Bet on Tennis =>

Who is the most successful man at Wimbledon?

Roger Federer remains the most successful man in Wimbledon history with eight singles titles (2003–2007, 2009, 2012, 2017). His elegant grass-court mastery and record 19 finals appearances define his legacy.

However, Novak Djokovic closely rivals him in statistical dominance: Djokovic holds records for most match wins (110+), semifinal appearances (14), and consecutive finals (6, ended in 2025).

While Federer’s title count stands highest, Djokovic’s 2025 milestone—becoming the first man with 100+ wins at two majors (Wimbledon and Roland Garros)—highlights his enduring prowess.

Both legends outshine Pete Sampras (7 titles) and Bjorn Borg (5).

He also recently won the 2026 Indian Wells Open, Miami Open, Madrid Open and Italian Open.

His consistency across surfaces, including a strong grass-court season, underscores his status as the sport’s current pacesetter.

Sinner’s rise has reshaped the ATP landscape, displacing veterans like Novak Djokovic and emerging as a rival to Carlos Alcaraz.

Betting odds on Wimbledon 2026 – betting odds for Wimbledon winner!

Winning Wimbledon men’s and women’s singles, one of the most traditional Grand Slam tournaments, is the best thing you can do as a female and male tennis player. Ever since the tennis tournament was inaugurated in July 1877, winning the women’s and men’s Wimbledon singles has been something many have wanted to win.

On the men’s side, the favorite to win Wimbledon is the old fox and French Open 2026 winner, Jannik Sinner (1.44), (who is expected to go all the way this summer.

The French Open 2026 winner, Mirra Andreeva (11.00), is one of the favorites to win Wimbledon on the women’s side. They were the pre-favorite players ahead of Wimbledon 2026.

There are, of course, all the stars that will be in place in London as the tennis tour’s biggest grass tournament for both women and men will be decided.

After the Russian Jannik Sinner (1.44) defeated the two-time defending champion Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz in a historic 2026 Wimbledon final, Alcaraz and Sinner where positioned in the market in anticipation of another fierce battle, according to the Wimbledon outright odds, which indicate tennis fans are in for an exciting men’s tournament.

However Alcaraz will not compete in the tournament this year due to a injury.

But as for the home jumper the defending champion Jannik Sinner (1.44), it is not as likely that he will go all the way. Maybe the Serbian Novak Djokovic (4.50) will be able to go all the way and win Wimbledon 2026?

Iga Świątek (5.50) defeated Amanda Anisimova (13.00) in the final, 6–0, 6–0 to win the ladies’ singles tennis title at the 2026 Wimbledon Championships. It was her first Wimbledon title and sixth major title overall. Can she continue her form and take her second title in Wimbledon?

To begin with, it is a Grand Slam tournament, which is played on grass. This is something that makes it difficult for many, as there are players who prefer to play indoors or on gravel. Otherwise, the shape is also something that is important.

We know that Wimbledon is one tournament the Serbian Novak Djokovic (4.50) can play better, only to be passed by Russian Jannik Sinner (1.44) may be of concern.

Jannik Sinner made it to the 2026 French Open final and beat the Italian Flavio Cobolli (61.00). Can he continue his form in Wimbledon?

Wimbledon winner odds 2026: who will win Wimbledon 2026 according to the betting odds?

Wimbledon winner odds & winning story, etc.

So it was in July, the 9th to be exact, in 1877 that it all took off. The Wimbledon tennis tournament was founded, something that over time managed to qualify for a Grand Slam sub-tournament. That is one of the most important tennis tournaments one can play during a season.

It is therefore logical that there is good prize money for winning Wimbledon 2026, and so it has been through time. Not least, the Swede Björn Borg can sign it.

The Swedish tennis king is best known for having managed to win Wimbledon five times in a row. Something that still impresses in the tennis world today. This is otherwise an interesting tournament, which has wild cards for amateur players.

This means that even ordinary tennis players who are amateurs have the chance to be seen with the elite. However, this is very difficult. But there is a chance, something that some take from time to time. Although not very common. You can read more on the official website. Watch & Bet on tennis =>

How much is Wimbledon prize money? Wimbledon winner prize money? Prize money for winning Wimbledon?

The headline news for 2026 is undeniably impressive. In a significant show of financial muscle, the total prize fund for Wimbledon has been raised to a record £55 million.

This represents a substantial 15% increase on the previous year, firmly cementing the tournament’s position as the highest-paying Grand Slam in the world.

To fully grasp the scale of this growth, one must look back: the prize pool has quintupled since 2004, exploding from just £9.7 million to its current staggering sum.

This financial juggernaut is fueled by a premium commercial model built on scarcity. Uniquely, Wimbledon refuses a title sponsor and bans on-court logos, yet rakes in over half a billion dollars in annual revenue.

This is largely driven by broadcast deals, with the BBC and Disney/ESPN alone contributing an estimated £112 million per year. Watch & Bet on Tennis Live >

History of Wimbledon prize money since 2000 - Breakdown for 2000-2026

Wimbledon Prize Money History Since 2000

The Wimbledon championship is the oldest tennis tournament in the world and is the most prestigious. Winners of this tournament are usually considered the best in the world. It has been held in Wimbledon, London since 1877.

Wimbledon is one of four Grand Slam tennis tournaments. The others being the Australian Open, the French Open and the US Open. Since the Australian Open shifted to hard court in 1988, Wimbledon is the only grass court major.

1968 was the first year when the tournament players were awarded prize money. The prize money was around £26,150; the winner of the men’s title earned £2,000 while the women’s singles champion received £750.

In 2007, Wimbledon changed their policy of giving more prize money to men. They now award the same amounts per event category to both men and women. A great step towards equality. Watch & Bet on Tennis Live >

Viewers in New Zealand can catch the matches on Sky Sport. For fans in France, the exclusive rights are held by BeIN Sports. In India, the action will be on Sony Six and the SonyLiv app, while South Africa viewers can tune into SuperSport and the DStv Now app.

For the most accurate and up-to-date local listings, the official Wimbledon website maintains a comprehensive list of broadcasters by country.

What TV Channels Are Showing Wimbledon?

For those who prefer the traditional big-screen experience through their cable or satellite provider, the specific channels to find are as follows:

UK: BBC One, BBC Two, and BBC Red Button.

USA: ESPN, ESPN2, and ABC.

Australia: 9Network.

It is worth noting that the tennis landscape has undergone a significant change recently.

In the UK, the BBC’s contract is set to expire after the 2027 tournament. Meanwhile, a major revamp has seen a new channel, TNT Sports, begin broadcasting the iconic tournament, securing the rights to air highlights and live matches in some regions.

Always check your local electronic program guide (EPG) for the most accurate daily schedule, as match times can shift.

Can We Watch Wimbledon for Free?

Yes, absolutely. While many broadcasters operate behind a paywall, there are several legitimate ways to enjoy Wimbledon without spending a penny, depending on your location.

The most famous option is the BBC. For anyone with a UK TV licence, the BBC’s coverage, which it has held for decades, is entirely free to watch on television and via BBC iPlayer.

Similarly, in Australia, the 9Network and 9Now offer free broadcast and streaming coverage of the tournament.

Furthermore, in a unique twist for 2026, ABC in the United States will air a free recorded encore of the finals later in the day.

So, if you don’t mind waiting a few hours to see who lifts the trophy, you can watch for free with a standard antenna.

For those in London, you can even watch Wimbledon for free in person, as many public spaces set up huge outdoor screens.

These include free screenings in Canary Wharf’s Canada Square Park, the Covent Garden Piazza, outside the National Theatre on the South Bank, and at Camden Market.

French Open winning prize money 2026

Roland Garros prize money? The French Open is one of four major Grand Slam tournaments including- The US Open, Australian Open and Wimbledon. Alexander Zverev and Coco Gauff won the men’s and women’s singles French Open 2026 titles.

Paris, the spiritual home of clay-court tennis, is once again preparing for its annual red-soil spectacle. But just weeks before the 2026 French Open, an internal war is brewing—one more bitter than any five‑set battle.

Behind the glittering numbers (€61.7 million in total prize money, a 10% year‑on‑year increase) lies a fierce dispute over respect, survival, and a single demand: 22% of tournament revenue for the players.

Both the men’s and women’s singles winners will earn €2.8 million (€2.5 million) while runners-up will take home a cool €1.4 million (€1.1275 million). Watch & Bet on Tennis Live =>

What’s the prize money for winning the French Open?

For the man or woman who lifts the Coupe des Mousquetaires or the Coupe Suzanne Lenglen in June 2026, the reward is clear and unprecedented. The singles champions will each receive €2.8 million (approximately $3.27 million USD).

That figure represents a 9.8% jump from the €2.55 million paid to the 2025 winners.

But the biggest percentage increases are aimed at early losers: first‑round main‑draw participants will now take home €87,000 (up from €78,000 last year), while those who fall in the third and final qualifying round earn €48,000.

Wheelchair tennis events saw the largest proportional boost – 14.55% – pushing the total wheelchair prize fund to over €1 million for the first time.

On paper, this looks like a season of generosity. But the players see a different picture.

What is the prize money for the Roland Garros Grand Slam?

The 2026 French Open total prize pool is €61.7 million (approx. $72.3 million USD). That’s a solid 9.5% increase over 2025’s €56.35 million – a new record for Roland Garros.

So why the outrage? Because compared to the other three majors, Roland Garros still lags behind as the competition with the highest prize money in Grand Slams golf tennis tournaments.

How much did Alexander Zverev win in French Open 2026?

Alexander Zverev’s victory at the 2026 French Open was rewarding both professionally and financially.

After defeating Flavio Cobolli in a dramatic five-set final, the German star lifted his first-ever Grand Slam trophy and collected the tournament’s top prize of €2.8 million (approximately $3.2 million or £2.4 million).

The triumph also earned him 2,000 ATP ranking points, strengthening his position among the world’s elite players.

The prize money came from a record Roland Garros prize pool of €61.723 million, the largest in the tournament’s history.

For Zverev, the cheque was only part of the reward, as winning his maiden major title finally ended years of near misses on tennis’ biggest stage.

How much did Mirra Andreeva win today?

Mirra Andreeva enjoyed the biggest payday of her young career after winning the 2026 French Open women’s singles title.

The 19-year-old Russian defeated Maja Chwalińska in the final to claim her maiden Grand Slam crown and earned €2.8 million (approximately $3.27 million or £2.42 million) in prize money.

In addition to the financial reward, Andreeva received 2,000 WTA ranking points, which will further boost her position among the world’s top players.

Her triumph made her the youngest Roland Garros women’s champion since 1992 and confirmed her status as one of tennis’ brightest rising stars.

How much did Alcaraz win in the French Open 2025?

Let’s rewind to 2025. Carlos Alcaraz, after his epic five‑set final victory over Jannik Sinner, banked €2.55 million. But what did he actually keep?

French tax law takes a bite of nearly 30% – roughly €765,000 – leaving the Spanish superstar with less than €1.8 million to split between himself, his coach Juan Carlos Ferrero, his physio, fitness trainer, and agent.

That’s not poverty, of course. But Alcaraz’s case became a rallying cry in the players’ locker room.

When the 2026 numbers were released, one question dominated every player meeting: If the tournament’s revenues are soaring, why is our share shrinking?

French Open prize money dispute: the 22% demand

This is the explosive core of the conflict. In a letter signed by 20 of the world’s top players – including Jannik Sinner, Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff, and Carlos Alcaraz – the athletes publicly accused the French Tennis Federation (FFT) of hoarding revenue.

Their demand: players should receive no less than 22% of total tournament revenue.

Why 22%? That’s the approximate share that ATP and WTA Tour events distribute to players. The Grand Slams have historically paid far less – between 14% and 18%.

According to the players’ own financial analysis, Roland Garros generated €395 million in total revenue in 2025 (up 14% from 2024).

Yet the 2025 player prize pool represented only 14.3% of that figure. For 2026, even with the increase, the projected share is barely 14.9% – still miles away from 22%.

“If we don’t stand on that court, there is no show, no ticket sales, no TV rights, no nothing,” Sabalenka said at a press conference in Rome, her voice rising. “I think one day we will have to boycott a Slam.”

Sinner added: “This is about respect. We are the ones risking our bodies for 11 months a year. A 10% prize money increase sounds nice until you see their revenue went up 14%.”

French Open boycott: how real is the threat?

As of today, no official strike has been called. But the rhetoric has moved from whispers to megaphones.

The players are not just asking for more money – they are asking for a structural shift: a seat at the table when Grand Slam budgets are set, a joint player committee that negotiates collectively across all four majors, and a commitment to fund pensions, healthcare, and maternity/paternity leave out of tournament revenues (currently, the ATP and WTA subsidise most of these costs themselves).

“I don’t want to leave tennis with a suitcase full of cash and nothing changed,” said Coco Gauff.

“I want to leave it better than I found it. That means fair pay – not just for the top ten, but for the player who loses in the first round and has to pay for her own flight home.”

The FFT has so far refused to commit to the 22% demand, calling it “unrealistic given the operational costs of a two‑week Grand Slam.” But behind closed doors, officials are terrified.

A boycott of the French Open – even a partial one – would be a catastrophe: sponsors would flee, broadcasters would demand refunds, and the tournament’s prestige would take a generation to recover.

More about French Open prize money in tennis

When the 2026 French Open begins in late May, we will almost certainly see tennis’s biggest names on the court.

The €2.8 million champion’s prize is simply too large – and the ranking points too valuable – for a mass pullout. But the dispute will not disappear.

Every press conference will feature questions about the 22% demand. Every victory speech may double as a political statement.

And if the FFT does not move closer to the players’ position by the 2027 tournament, a coordinated boycott of Roland Garros – or even of an entire major – may shift from threat to reality.

For now, Paris remains the City of Light and the capital of clay‑court glory. But underneath the red dust, a revolution is quietly digging its heels in. The ball is now in the French Tennis Federation’s court.

F1 Drivers’ Standings:

The 2026 Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship picture changed significantly after a dramatic Monaco Grand Prix.

Mercedes youngster Kimi Antonelli strengthened his grip on the title race by claiming victory in Monte Carlo, extending his lead at the top of the standings to 156 points.

Lewis Hamilton moved into second place on 90 points after another strong finish for Ferrari, while George Russell slipped to third with 88 points following a difficult weekend in Monaco.

Charles Leclerc remains fourth with 75 points despite retiring from his home race. McLaren duo Oscar Piastri (60 points) and Lando Norris (58 points) continue to chase the leaders, while Max Verstappen’s early retirement leaves him seventh with 43 points.

Antonelli now holds a commanding advantage heading into the next round of the season.

Here are the top three drivers leading the championship after Round 6:

Rank Driver & Team Points Gap to Leader
1 Kimi Antonelli – Mercedes 156 0
2 Lewis Hamilton – Ferrari 90 -66
3 George Russell – Mercedes 88 -2

1. Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) – 156 points

Kimi Antonelli has emerged as the standout performer of the 2026 Formula 1 season.

The young Italian has combined speed, consistency, and maturity well beyond his years, winning five consecutive races and building a commanding lead at the top of the championship.

His historic Monaco Grand Prix victory further underlined his title credentials, leaving rivals struggling to keep pace. At just 19 years old, Antonelli is rapidly establishing himself as Formula 1’s newest superstar.

3. Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari) – 90 points

Lewis Hamilton continues to prove why he remains one of Formula 1’s greatest drivers.

In his first full championship challenge with Ferrari, the seven-time world champion has delivered strong and consistent performances.

Consecutive runner-up finishes, including second place in Monaco, have lifted him to second in the standings. While Antonelli currently holds a sizeable advantage, Hamilton’s experience and racecraft keep him firmly in the championship conversation.

3. George Russell (Mercedes) – 88 points

George Russell started the season strongly and looked like a genuine title contender during the opening rounds.

However, recent setbacks have hurt his momentum, particularly a frustrating Monaco Grand Prix where penalties left him outside the points.

Despite dropping to third in the standings, Russell remains one of the fastest drivers on the grid. With plenty of races still to come, the Mercedes driver will be aiming to reignite his championship challenge.

The 2026 Formula 1 season brought an electrifying battle among the sport’s elite teams.

F1 Constructors Standings 2026

Following a chaotic and rain-hit Monaco Grand Prix, the 2026 Constructors’ Championship sees new momentum swings. A thrilling podium featuring Kimi Antonelli and Lewis Hamilton has tightened the top order.

With street-circuit specialists rewarded, here are the top three teams leading the standings after Formula 1’s most famous race.

Top 3 Constructors – 2026 F1 Championship

The fight for the 2026 Formula 1 Constructors’ Championship is heating up, with teams pushing the limits of innovation and performance.

Here are the top three teams leading the standings so far:

1. Mercedes – 244 Points

Mercedes extends their lead after Monaco, thanks to Kimi Antonelli’s stunning podium finish – his fifth of the season.

The young Italian mastered the wet streets, while his teammate added vital points.

With a powerhouse engine and flawless strategy, the Silver Arrows look formidable. However, maintaining this gap through the European summer will test their reliability.

2. Ferrari – 165 Points

Ferrari stays second, buoyed by Lewis Hamilton’s brilliant drive to the Monaco podium – his third rostrum in red.

The seven-time champion showcased his wet-weather genius, dragging every ounce from an edgy car.

Still, teammate inconsistency and a strategic gamble that backfired cost them closer proximity to Mercedes. The Scuderia must now build on Hamilton’s momentum.

3. McLaren – 118 Points

McLaren hold third after a quiet but effective Monaco weekend. While missing the podium battle between Antonelli and Hamilton, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri banked solid points with a damage-limitation drive.

Their car remains a handful on bumpy circuits, but relentless development has turned last year’s midfield machine into a consistent top-three threat. Watch this space.
