Five Things Learned From Today’s Premier League Action – 16/04/2016

Today in the Premier League, Manchester City moved into third place, while Aston Villa’s relegation was finally confirmed. The other two teams in the bottom three won, while a young prodigy found the net once again.

Here are five things learned from today’s games:

  1. he Premier League Golden Boot race is well and truly on

With Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy, on 22 and 21 league goals respectively, leading the golden boot race but not in action today, Sergio Aguero, with his treble at Chelsea, moved onto 21. It looks like a nice three-way fight for this title is heating up nicely.

2. Saido Berahino should stay away from taking penalties for a while

The West Brom forward is one of the more self-assured forwards in the Premier League. But today was not to be his day, as he saw not one, but TWO penalties saved by Watford goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes. Even going the other way with the second kick could not change the outcome.

3. Newcastle United still need three wins from their last five games, if not more

Newcastle needed to beat Swansea City today, but they probably would have preferred a draw between relegation rivals Sunderland and Norwich City earlier in the day. As it turned out, Sunderland took the three points, and the Toon need three wins from their last five games. It’s the small matter of Manchester City next.

4. Wayne Rooney looked sharp on his return from injury

The England striker returned to the starting lineup today against Aston Villa. He showed quick thinking to deliver a fine 50-yard ball to Antonio Valencia. Valencia promptly found Marcus Rashford, who slotted home the only goal of the game, and send Villa down to the Championship.

5. Southampton are as hard a nut to crack as anybody

Last season, the Saints were difficult to break down defensive wise, with a goals conceded record that matches favourably with most other teams. This season, this trend has shown no signs of changing, with Everton the latest team to find that out.
