Birmingham City is a Championship club based in Birmingham, England. They have been going up and down the divisions in recent years but have been mainly in the Championship. The last time Birmingham were in the Premier League was in 2010/11.

Birmingham enjoyed their most successful period between the 1950s and early 1960s. They finished sixth in the First Division in the 1955–56 season and reached the 1956 FA Cup Final.  The Blues won their first major trophy, the League Cup, in 1963, beating Aston Villa. They won the League Cup again for the second time in 2011. Birmingham City have played in the top tier of English football for half their history.

The Birmingham nickname is the Blues and their fans are known as “Bluenoses”. The main rivals of Birmingham are Aston Villa, who are currently in the Premier League after earning promotion through the Championship playoffs in May.

Birmingham’s home ground is the St Andrew’s Stadium in Birmingham. It can host up to 29,409 fans and it has been their home ground since 1906. Birmingham are one of the oldest clubs around going all the way back to 1875.

Birmingham City Players Salaries 2021 – Weekly Wages

A little known fact about Birmingham City – they are not too financially stable right now. Last season, in May, they were fined 9 points in the Championship which saw them drop from the 13th spot to the 18th due to breach of EFL financial fair play rules.

The breakdown was:

Season 2015/16 – Loss £1.982m

Season 2016/17 – Loss £12.944m

And then, Season 2017/18 – Loss £33.861m (£20.86m above the annual £13m threshold). Blues had forecasted making player sales profits of £8.3 million. In January 2017, Gianfranco Zola had signed four new players for £7.45m and the summer after, Harry Redknapp brought in nine permanent signings and five loan players at a total cost of £23.75 million.

They finished in the 17th spot last season, fired their old manager, Gary Monk and are now being led by Pep Clotet.
