Which players had to take the no.1 spot?

It’s always entertaining when an outfield player has to stick a pair of gloves on and get between the sticks.

Here are 10 of the best times outfield players have had to improvise and go in goal for their teams.

10) Kevin Großkreutz

After Weidenfeller was sent off for Dortmund, Großkreutz was forced to go in goal to face a penalty against Hoffenheim. However, he wasn’t anywhere near successful in saving it.

9) John Terry

After both Petr Cech and Carlo Cudicini were stretchered off injured in 2006, Terry stepped up to go in goal. He actually kept a clean sheet, and Chelsea won 1-0 away at Reading.

8) Rio Ferdinand

With both United goalkeepers forced off the pitch in their FA Cup game at home to Portsmouth, it was Rio Ferdinand who found himself in goal. However, he couldn’t stop a Sully Muntari penalty to knock them out of the competition for that year.

7) Harry Kane

Kane went in goal in a Europa League game in 2014 after Hugo Lloris got himself sent off and Spurs had used all their changes. He let a free-kick slip through his fingers, but Spurs still won the game 5-1.

6) Vinnie Jones

In 1995, he was forced to go in goal away at Newcastle. He conceded 3 and Wimbledon lost the game 6-1.

5) John O’Shea

With United having made all three changes and Edwin Van Der Sar going off injured, defender John O’Shea went in goal away at Tottenham in 2007. He kept a clean sheet and managed to see out a 4-0 win for United.

4) Alex Revell

The heroics of Alex Revell earned MK Dons a draw in 2016 when he was forced to go in goal with 10 minutes to go after their goalkeeper got sent off. He SAVED the penalty and turned into a hero for the team.

3) Felipe Melo

Melo stepped up to go in goal for Galatasaray in 2012, and like Revell, saved a penalty to earn his team a win against Elazigspor.

2) Niall Quinn

In 1991, Quinn had already scored for Manchester City against Derby to put them 1-0 up. But then, he had to go in goal and face a penalty. Derby needed to win the game that day to avoid relegation, but Quinn saved, and Derby lost the game 2-1 and went down.

1) Cosmin Moti

With the game going to penalties and Champions League qualification at stake, Ludogorets’ keeper was sent off and Moti had to go in goal for the shootout. He scored his own penalty, before saving two of Steaua Bucuresti FC’s penalties and sending the Bulgarian club to the Champions League.
