5 blockbuster signings that could still take place this summer 11
Atharva Gosavi

The transfer season, much like the Chamber of Secrets, is open yet again and the sight of agents and officials scurrying across Europe to complete deals will be a common sight for pretty much all summer. The likes of Barcelona and Atletico Madrid have already stamped their mark across the window after completing mega million deals for Joao Felix and Antoine Griezmann respectively. Real Madrid haven’t been left behind as well, after snapping up Eden Hazard from Chelsea. But that surely is not all, as a number of other European heavyweights are working towards completing blockbuster signings for the next season.
On that note, let’s have a look at the top 5 mega-million signings that could still go over the line this summer.

#5 Harry Maguire (Leicester City)

Manchester United have a considerable share of the spotlight in the transfer market this summer. After suffering through a horrendous season before which they hardly made any valuable additions, The Red Devils will be keen to avoid the same error this time.
Invigorating the defensive personnel remains a crucial target for United this summer and they have been linked with some high-profile defenders accordingly. Absence in this season’s Champions League has cost them the signature of Matthijs de Ligt, however, Harry Maguire is pretty much within their grasp.
The Leicester City center-half is the best in his craft after Virgil van Dijk and no wonder the Foxes are demanding a world-record fee for their prized asset.
Leicester won’t budge for anything less than £90m and United have an offer of £80m in place(£60m upfront and £20m in add-ons). Pragmatically, Maguire also remains the only best option for the Red Devils to chase given that Manchester City have already pulled out of the race for his signature and he is also ready to keep his Champions League ambitions aside to play at Old Trafford.
If United do land the 26-year-old, they will definitely improve a lot at the heart of the defence, knowing how the likes of Smalling, Jones and Rojo have been consistently churning out below-par performances for years.
#4 Leroy Sane (Manchester City)

Good things are never meant to last forever – something Bayern Munich are experiencing at this very moment. The famous era of ‘Robbery’ has come to a close; Franck Ribery is seeking new pastures while Arjen Robben has called it a day on his glittering trophy-laden career.
While their departures leave massive holes in the lineup, the Bavarians have already earmarked Leroy Sane to plug the gaps. The Manchester City winger is amongst the elite crop of players in the Premier League. He also has adequate Bundesliga experience under his belt, having arrived at the Etihad from Schalke 04.
Sane fell down the pecking order under Pep Guardiola last season, giving rise to talks about his exit in the rumour mill.
Bayern have already broken their transfer record after signing Lucas Hernandez from Atletico Madrid for £68m. The Bavarians might need to cough up even more if they wish to sign Leroy Sane. If the transfer goes through, it will definitely be one of the highlights in a long list of big-money transfers this summer.
#3 Philippe Coutinho (Barcelona)

The grass is not always greener on the other side, is it? That’s the wisdom Jurgen Klopp tried to pass on to Philippe Coutinho when he was intent on leaving Liverpool for Barcelona. A £142m and one-and-a-half year later, the Brazilian’s dream move to the Nou Camp is in absolute shambles and he seems to be getting what his former coach was trying to say back then.
Coutinho has miserably failed to justify his mammoth price-tag, inviting all but criticism from every nook and corner of Barcelona. He is longing to end this barren spell and Barca are also said to be ready to clear him off their wage bill this summer.
Liverpool and Paris Saint Germain are the only clubs in the race for his signature. A move back to Anfield is currently revolving in his mind and if the Kop do decide to go for him, they would be making him the most expensive signing in their history. Paris Saint Germain also remains a likely destination, although Coutinho might be used as a sweetener in a deal for Neymar.
#2 Paul Pogba (Manchester United)

The Paul Pogba conundrum is becoming a headache for Manchester United fans and officials alike as they look to have clarity on the subject as soon as possible.
Pogba had his personal best season last year, albeit United were nothing more than wreckage last season. The Frenchman and his agent, Mino Raiola have both made his desire of leaving the club public already.
Now, it remains to be seen if United can hold on to their superstar. Real Madrid and Juventus are interested in acquiring his services, with Los Blancos boss Zinedine Zidane said to be a massive fan of the 26-year-old.
Manchester United have slapped a £150m price tag on Pogba and it remains to be seen which of the two giants manages to satisfy the Red Devils’ asking price for the player.
#1 Neymar (Paris Saint Germain)

Just two years ago, Neymar completed a world-record move to Paris Saint Germain from Barcelona. However, his ambitions have taken a massive hit as neither the player nor the club have managed to do anything the significant on the European stage. The Brazilian’s absence due to injury in crucial stages of the Champions League has seen the Les Parisiens crash out of the competition. And now, Neymar’s recent actions clearly tell that he is pining to return to his former club.
The Brazilian, however, won’t come cheap. PSG are ready to let him leave only if they recoup the £222m fee they forked out to sign him in 2017. Barcelona have already coughed up £120m to sign Antoine Griezmann this summer, hence a player plus cash deal remains the only possible way for La Blaugrana to bring back their former star.
According to recent reports, the Spanish giants are ready to offer £116m and any three of Umtiti, Coutinho, Rakitic and Semedo in lieu for Neymar. It remains to be seen if PSG tend to accept this offer as the deal would also include Coutinho, who is said to be a target to replace his Brazilian teammate at the Parc des Princes.
