Top players currently playing in Italy

Italian football has been under real questioning in recent seasons, with top-talent leaving the league due to financial powers elsewhere, and clubs failing to stamp their mark in the European competitions.

However, after Juventus reached the Champions League final last season, and with money expected to be spent in Serie A this summer, the Italian league could become more credible once again.

During the early 00’s, Serie A was one of the biggest leagues which played host to the biggest talents. If you don’t believe us, just google AC Milan 2006 team.

So with a busy summer expected in Italy, SillySeason thought it would be a perfect time to look into top talent already playing football in Serie A.

Sadly the likes of Carlos Tevez and Andrea Pirlo have left the league, with Tevez heading to Argentina and Pirlo heading to America, but there are still top talents in Italy.

Lets start the list.

10. Marek Hamšík – Napoli

Starting the list is Napoli play-maker Marek Hamsik.

The midfielder has been strongly linked with a move away from Naples over the past few seasons, but his loyalty to the club has kept him in Italy.

Despite missing out on the Champions League for next season, Hamsik is expected to remain at the club and continue to captain the Serie A side.

A creative attacking-midfielder with superb vision and accuracy, Hamsik is deadly in Serie A and is one of the best flair players in the country.

9. Diego López – AC Milan

It’s often said goalkeeper don’t get enough credit but not on our watch as Diego Lopez for AC Milan comes in at number-nine on our list.

The former-Real Madrid ‘keeper completed his transfer to AC Milan a couple of seasons ago, after Madrid signed Keylor Navas.

The 33-year-old has gone on to make 28 Serie A appearances for AC and is one of the standout shot-stoppers in Italy.

8. Radja Nainggolan – AS Roma

AS Roma midfielder Radja Nainggolan makes it on our list, coming in at number-eight.

The Belgium international has recently signed a five-year deal at the club, giving Roma full ownership of the star after agreeing terms with Cagliari earlier this summer.

The powerhouse midfielder was wanted by Premier League duo Liverpool and Manchester United, but after signing a new deal in Italy, he confirmed that his dream is to win stuff with Roma and that’s why he stayed put.

Nainggolan puts in relentless shifts in the middle of the park and his power and ability helps keep things ticking for Rudi Garcia’s side.

7. Andrea Barzagli – Juventus

Of course a Juventus star was going to make our list and this is the first of four.

Andrea Barzagli has created a brilliant partnership at the back alongside Giorgio Chiellini, who will feature later, and has become one of the top centre-backs in European football.

Despite his age, Barzagli is still putting in consistent performances and is a key part of Juve’s success over the past four years.

The 34-year-old can read the game superbly, which makes up for his lack of pace, and with his knowledge of the game, it keeps his performances at a high level.

6. Miralem Pjanić – AS Roma

Miralem Pjanic. Another AS Roma midfielder and another one who’s been linked with the Premier League.

A brilliant flair-midfielder who on his day, can pick apart any defence. Pjanic has been strongly linked with a move to Liverpool and Manchester United, just like his team-mate Nainggolan, but as of yet, he has refused to complete a transfer.

His quick-feet and his ability to pick a pass makes him a deadly attacking-midfielder.

5. Gonzalo Higuaín – Napoli

Entering the top-five, it’s the best striker in Italy, Gonzalo Higuain.

With Carloz Tevez leaving to join Boca Juniors, Higuain is considered the top-striker in Serie A, but that could all change depending on his future.

Higuain has been very open about his long-term future and has admitted that it could be away from Italy, with Premier League teams interested in signing him.

However, Napoli’s president has revealed that they won’t sell for anything less than his release clause, which is just shy of £70million.

The big price-tag could see him stay in Italy, which Napoli would enjoy due to his ability to finish and his eye for goal.

4. Daniele De Rossi – AS Roma

One of the best central-midfielders in Serie A.

Daniele De Rossi has been one of the top talents in Italy for many years now, and after snubbing several chances to move away from the club, he is undoubtedly a club legend in Rome.

The box-to-box midfielder is dangerous in front of goal, but is also very commanding when dealing with defensive matters. A top tackler and a class contributor of the ball.

De Rossi is certainly one of the best midfielders in Serie A and probably in Europe.

3. Giorgio Chiellini – Juventus

A lot of football fans would say it’s between Giorgio Chiellini and Thiago Silva for the best centre-back in the world.

However, because Chiellini is in Serie A, he is on the list and makes it in third position as the best player in Italy, only behind two of his Juve team-mates.

Chiellini has been a top defender for the past decade and he continues to improve year in, year out.

2. Arturo Vidal – Juventus

Coming in at number-two and our runner-up is Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal.

His power, his pace, his tough tackling, his brilliant distribution and his eye for goal makes him an all-round class midfielder.

Vidal is a recognised box-to-box midfielder for The Old Lady, and his recent performances have caught the eye of Premier League side Arsenal and La Liga giants Real Madrid.

However at the minute, Vidal is a Juve player and one of the best players in Italian football.

Vidal played a crucial part in Chile’s Cope America victory earlier this month, despite his antics off the field.

1) Paul Pogba – Juventus

Of course Paul Pogba makes it as number-one. Are you surprised?

He’s arguably the best centre-midfielder in Europe right now and his price-tag of around £70million sums that up.

Pogba left Manchester United in 2012 FOR FREE and has since turned into one of the best players in the world, wanted by several European giants.

The Frenchman’s power, pace, strength and all-round game is just top-class and that’s why he tops our list.

For Serie A sake, we hope he stays in Italy for the foreseeable future.
