Reports suggest that Higuain has privately agreed to make the switch to the Emirates Stadium this summer, with the transfer set to be completed this week.

Talks between the striker’s representatives and Arsenal officials have progressed well, with the two clubs set to agree on a price soon.

Arsenal, who had been monitoring the French-born Argentinian since 2004, lost out on his signature in 2006 when he made the move to Real Madrid from River Plate.

The Gunners are set to break their club transfer record – the £15million (R235-million) paid to Zenit St Petersburg for Andrey Arshavin – in their quest to sign the forward and make him the club’s top earner in a £150,000 (R2.3 million)-per-week deal.

This despite Real Madrid president Florentino Perez last week telling clubs not to bother with a £25 bid for his frontman, saying, “With £25.5m it’s better that they don’t come.”

Higuain has made 187 appearances for Los Blancos since his move seven years ago, scoring 107 goals
