The Napoli forward was linked with a move to the Gunners after an impressive World Cup.

And while Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis dismissed talk of a £17m move as laughable, things have not gone smoothly since Insigne returned from Brazil.

Indeed, Napoli fans have started to turn on the homegrown product and he was booed as he left the pitch during the Partenopei’s 1-1 draw with Athletic Bilbao in their Champions League qualifying match earlier this week.

That saw the player’s wife, Jenny Darone, take to Instagram to post an angry message hinting at the Insigne’s unrest.

She said: “Napoli does not deserve him.

“Today he does wrong and everyone is quick to point the finger.

“Tomorrow he scores and he becomes a saint.”

The Gunners remain in the market for attacking reinforcements this summer, although whether Insigne fits the bill remains to be seen.

Nevertheless, if there is any truth to Arsene Wenger’s interest in the player, the time could be right to launch a bid to test Napoli’s resolve as the transfer window winds down.
