Top 10 Most Expensive Arsenal Signings

Arsenal Football Club are not known for spending big on transfers, but in recent years, they have shown some severe financial strength in the transfer window, breaking their transfer record twice in two seasons.

The Gunners have recently transferred from Highbury to the Emirates Stadium and that took a lot of financial power away from the North London club, but with the stadium finally paid off, it’s time for Arsenal to start competing with the best in the transfer market.

10. Samir Nasri – £12 million

Samir Nasri starts up the list of Top 10 Most Expensive Arsenal Signings. Nasri joined Arsenal in 2008 from French side Marseille for £12 million.

After having a successful career at the Emirates Stadium, Nasri became yet another Arsenal player to swap red for blue as he joined Manchester City in 2011 for £25 million.

9. Mathieu Debuchy – £12 million

One of Arsenal’s recent signings makes the list at number-9. Mathieu Debuchy joined the North London outfit for £12 million in the summer after agreeing to leave Newcastle United.

Debuchy had a breakthrough season with Newcastle and attracted interest from the Londoners, who were on the look out for a Bacary Sagna replacement after he also joined Manchester City.

8. Sylvian Wiltord – £13 million

Another Frenchman makes the most expensive list and it’s striker Sylvian Wiltord. Following his £13 million from Bordeaux in 2000, the French international spent four years at the club before leaving in 2004. 

Wiltord has since retired from the professional game.

7. Andrey Arshavin – £16 million

Arsenal’s record transfer fee for a long time, Andrey Arshavin comes in at number 7 costing The Gunners £16million from Russian side Zenit St Petersburg.

The Russian playmaker burst onto the scene during the Euros and his performances made Arsenal break their transfer record in January.

After a great debut season, the little star faded away at the club and has since left to re-join Zenit.

6. Santi Cazorla – £16 million

Santi Cazorla is one of the best players at Arsenal right now and also one of the most expensive signings. The Spaniard was signed from La Liga side Malaga in 2012 for a reported fee of £16 million.

Cazorla has proved to be worth the money and has been instrumental in the midfield in the past three seasons.

He is well known for his amazing vision and ability to use both feet.

5. Calum Chambers – £16 million

Calum Chambers is one of the best young talents in the Premier League and was one of many that left The Saints during the Summer.

The 20 year old signed for Arsenal this Summer from Southampton for a reported fee of £16 million.

Chambers also topped of his impressive year by making his debut for the England national team.

4. Danny Welbeck – £16 million

Another new boy makes the list of the Top 10 Most Expensive Arsenal Signings.

Danny Welbeck was signed from Manchester United for £16 million and has scored a few goals already for The Gunners, including a hat-trick in the Champions League against Galatasaray.

The Gunners shocked their fans by signing him on Transfer Deadline Day from their fierce-rivals.

3. Jose Antonio Reyes – £17.5 million

Jose Antonio Reyes comes in  at number 3.

The Spaniard joined Arsenal in 2004 from Sevilla for £17.5 million. Reyes spent 3 years at the club before returning to Spain after a less-than-impressive time at Highbury.

2. Alexis Sanchez – £35 million

New boy Alexis Sanchez is Arsenal’s second most expensive player after Arsene Wenger coughed up £35m to sign him from FC Barcelona.

Alexis has hit the ground running in the Premier League after joining over the Summer and was voted in the PFA Team of the Year and also finished fourth in the PFA Player of the Year category.

Despite struggling in the second half of the season, Alexis was superb for Arsenal during the first-half of the campaign and was instrumental in them keeping up a top-four fight.

1. Mesut Ozil – £42 million

Mesut Ozil is officially Arsenal’s most expensive signing ever.

The German international completed his move from Real Madrid in 2013 for a fee around £42 million making him the Most Expensive Arsenal Signing.

Despite many claiming Ozil has been a flop during his time at the club, the German has been superb in recent weeks and has played a pivotal role within the club and helping them achieve back-to-back FA Cup Finals.

Ozil is also yet to lose an FA Cup tie or a home Premier League game.
