Arsenal boss won’t blame David Ospina for defeat

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has refused to blame stand-in goalkeeper David Ospina for the club’s 3-2 defeat to Olympiakos last night.

The Gunners knew it was a must-win game last night to keep their hopes of Champions League glory alive, but after a calamitous error from the Colombian, they once again fell short, losing 3-2 on the night.

Arsenal lost in Croatia during the opening game-week after Dinamo Zagreb shocked them, and with a double-header against Bayern Munich coming up, they knew it was a must-win against the Greek side.

However, they once again tasted defeat, with Ospina almost throwing the ball into his own net for one of the goals.

After the game, questions were asked about Wenger‘s decision to play Ospina over Petr Cech, but the Frenchman refused to blame the former and just claimed his side were unlucky on the night.

Wenger Won’t Point Fingers

Wenger said: “Is it my worst night in the Champions League? No. Try sitting on the bench and losing in a final. To look at a goalkeeping mistake is always the simple thing.
“No goalkeeper is mistake-free. That could have happened to Petr Cech.

“I do not have to sit here and give people an explanation of every decision I make. I leave people to judge that. But it was not because of that that we lost the game. It’s a farce.

“I make the decisions and the selections and I am responsible. I know things that people don’t know and that they ignore when I make those decisions. I cannot make selections based on polls and everybody’s point of view.”

Wenger did admit that the defeat leaves his side in a poor position with four games remaining.

“This leaves us in a bad position, but we are still in it. We have to get a result against Bayern at home. We are not out of this.

“They had four shots and scored three goals. We lacked concentration defensively and were unlucky.”
