Barcelona have stepped up their interest in Arsenal centre-back Thomas Vermaelen as they look to improve their defence this summer.
Barca have reportedly have a £34million bid for PSG’s Marquinhos rejected, so are now considering other options. Vermaelen’s contract at Arsenal is running out next year and it is thought that he will finialise a switch to Manchester United over the coming weeks, unless Barca can stick their noses in.
They are also tracking Tottenham’s Jan Vertonghan, despite him dismissing such speculation over the recent weeks. Vermaelen joined Arsenal in the summer of 2009 from Dutch giants Ajax and has scored 13 goals for the Emirates Stadium outfit during that time.
