Blues were desperate to land star this summer

Chelsea were ready to battle Manchester United for AS Monaco striker Anthony Martial, according to reports.

The Red Devils snapped up the striker for a whopping £36million, making him one of the most expensive teenagers in world football, but there was a reason United paid over the odds.

According to reports, Jose Mourinho was keeping his eye on the 19-year-old and was prepared to match United‘s bid, but found out he had moved too late.

Monaco Chose United

The Ligue 1 side knocked back Chelsea‘s offer after informing them they’d already agreed terms with United and Louis van Gaal, leaving Martial no choice in the matter and heading to Old Trafford.

Martial’s move to United could end up costing the club around £58m with add-ons and bonuses, but it’s a fee that Chelsea were also prepared to pay.
