Manchester United manager, Louis Van Gaal, wants to sell defenders, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones at the end of the season.

The duo have struggled in the Dutchman’s new formation, which is a 3-5-2 system including full-backs, and they are now set to be sold by the club as Van Gaal continues to re-shape the club.

Van Gaal spent over £150million last Summer in making the team his own, and he is set to have yet another expensive transfer window with defensive reinforcements high on his list.

According to reports, Van Gaal will sell Jones and Smalling before trying to sign Mats Hummels from Borussia Dortmund and Diego Godin from Atletico Madrid.

Van Gaal signed Marcos Rojo and Luke Shaw last Summer as defenders, but failed to land experienced defenders, and that is what he wants to put right at the end of this season.
