CHELSEA V PSG- ROUND THREE! 1
Luke Adam

Chelsea and PSG are set to do battle once again this evening in the Champions League, making it six ties in the past three competitions.

Ahead of the last 16 second leg tonight at Stamford Bridge, we thought it would be appropriate to take a look back at the recent 5 encounters.

The prize for tonight’s winner is a place in the quarter final’s of the Champions League. Based on previous meeting’s between the two side, both managers will be hopeful of progressing.

The Blues will have to overturn a 2-1 deficit to progress this evening but it would take a brave man to bet against one of Europe’s best comeback kids!

Lets take a look back into the previous encounters:

Sloppy Chelsea give themselves a mountain to climb!

PSG 3 V 1 CHELSEA | Parc Des Princes | 02.04.2014

PSG secured a 3-1 victory over sloppy Chelsea in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final in Paris.

Ezequiel Lavezzi opened the scoring for Laurent Blanc’s team on four minutes with a sweetly-struck half-volley, but Eden Hazard kept his cool from the penalty spot 20 minutes later to draw Jose Mourinho’s men level.

Hazard hit the upright in a lively first half for the Belgian playmaker – but the Parisians gained a first-leg lead to take to London next Tuesday when David Luiz turned a free-kick from Lavezzi into his own net just after the hour mark.

The visitors tried to ensure PSG only had a one-goal advantage to take to Stamford Bridge- but a magical run from Javier Pastore in stoppage-time saw him jink past three Chelsea defenders before steering a low drive past Petr Cech at his near post to make it 3-1 on the night.

Chelsea were left with a mountain to climb in the second leg.

Heroic Demba Ba sets the Bridge alight as Chelsea overcome the odds!

In the second leg, Andre Schurrle gave the Stamford Bridge faithful hope, volleying home a first-half strike but with three minutes to play it was PSG seemingly bound for the semi-finals.

Chelsea had twice hit the woodwork through Schurrle and Oscar but could find no way through… until Demba Ba bundled home an 87th-minute winner.

The goal sparked Mourinho into wild celebration, storming down the touchline to join his players, reminiscent of his reaction to Porto’s winner against Manchester United in 2004.

The drama wasn’t over – Marquinhos would have sent PSG through if it wasn’t for a superb injury-time stop from Petr Cech – but Chelsea held on to set up their third final-four appearance in the competition under Mourinho.

Chelsea earn a draw in Paris as PSG fail to capitalise on their chances!

PSG 1 V 1 CHELSEA | Parc Des Princes | 17.02.2015

Chelsea withstood waves of Paris St-Germain attacks to claim a draw in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.

Branislav Ivanovic headed Jose Mourinho’s team in front after Gary Cahill’s flick from John Terry’s cross.

But PSG dominated the second half and scored a deserved equaliser when Edinson Cavani headed in.

Cavani came close to scoring a winner but prodded his effort wide after swapping passes with Blaise Matuidi.

The Blues had an away goal and home advantage in the second leg making the Premier League leaders favourites to progress for the second year running.

Luiz comes back to haunt Chelsea!

CHELSEA 2 V 2 PSG | Stamford Bridge | 11.03.2015

An extra-time Thiago Silva header saw Paris Saint-Germain knock Chelsea out of the Champions League and book their place in the quarter-finals by virtue of the away goals rule after a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge.

The visitors had been facing an uphill task when star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic was controversially sent off shortly after the half-hour mark, but they got off lightly when a foul on Diego Costa in the box went unpunished.

Edinson Cavani then hit the post for PSG before Gary Cahill looked to have settled an ill-tempered tie with an 81st-minute drive, though former Chelsea man David Luiz forced an additional 30 minutes with a bullet header five minutes later.

PSG had the momentum heading into extra time, but they were undone when Silva attempted to palm the ball clear in the box having mistimed his jump, giving Eden Hazard the chance to fire the hosts in front from the spot. He did not disappoint and put the Blues 2-1 in front.

But Silva had the last word – his looping header from a corner turned the match on its head to stun Stamford Bridge into silence, seeing PSG into the quarter-finals at the end of a frantic game.

Advantage Paris as Blues waste chances!

PSG 2 V 1 CHELSEA | Parc Des Princes | 16.02.2016

Edinson Cavani’s second-half winner gave the French champions the advantage at the halfway stage of a well-contested last-16 tie.

Substitute Edinson Cavani fired the winning goal in the 78th minute after Chelsea’s defence had withstood heavy pressure for much of the game on Tuesday night.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s deflected free-kick had given PSG the lead in the first half, before Jon Obi Mikel equalised for Chelsea in stoppage time before the break.

PSG dominated the early stages, with Lucas Moura, Marco Verratti and Ibrahimovic all threatening Thibaut Courtois’ goal, but it was Chelsea who should have taken the lead midway through the first half as their performance level improved throughout the game.

The Blues were guilty of missing a host of decent chances, and in the end will have been disappointed not to leave Paris with a draw.

The tie is finally poised for tonights sixth clash and the best comeback boys in the business will be hoping to turn over the goal deficit to see themselves through to the 2016 Champions League quarter final.
