Manchester United and Chelsea have been joined in their pursuit of Valencia midfielder Andre Gomes, with reports claiming Real Madrid have edged ahead.

Valencia are believed to be holding out for £54m for Gomes, a key part of Portugal’s victorious Euro 2016 winning squad this summer. He provided the assist for Nani’s goal in their opening game against Iceland.

He has spent the last two seasons at Valencia, the first on loan, from Benfica, signing a permanent deal last summer.

Real may use a couple of players as makeweights in any deal for Gomes, the most notable being Jese.

If he does sign, it could signal the end at the Bernabeu for James Rodriguez and Isco.
