Pair worked together at Real Madrid

Mesut Ozil is thought to be wanted by Manchester United as Arsenal keep trying to tie him down for a new deal.

His current deal at the Emirates expires in 2018, and he is yet to sign a new one. He is thought to be holding out for a massive increase on his already £140,000 per week wage.

Old Trafford boss Jose Mourinho has previously called him “the best No.10 in the world”, when the pair worked together at Real Madrid.

And the Portuguese would love to pair him with Paul Pogba in midfield at United.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has always maintained that the manager should be the highest-paid employee at any football club.

But Arsenal will have to overrule Wenger’s theory if they want to keep Ozil and star striker Alexis Sanchez.

Wenger, whose own contract expires in the summer, earns £160,000 a week and is unlikely to get much of a rise if he agrees to a new deal.
