Tottenham Hotspur striker Vincent Janssen has revealed how he almost walked away from the game.

The Netherlands forward moved to White Hart Lane in a £17m transfer from AZ Alkmaar this summer after scoring 30 goals last season.

However, so far this term Janssen has struggled to replicate that form in front of goal, finding the net just once, against Gillingham in the League Cup.

Janssen was released by Feyenoord in 2013, and he almost walked away, before deciding to rebuild his career with Almere City.

“I had to make a decision – carry on with football or do other things,” he told L’Equipe. “When you playing in the Dutch second division, you cannot make a living like that. I said to myself: ‘I am going to give everything, I will give it one last try’. And I arrived at a great club, with a great coach and I pushed my boundaries.”

Janssen, despite being behind Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min in the Spurs forward line pecking order, believes the goals will eventually flow.

“I am not worried,” he insisted. “Last season it was the same. It will come naturally. Once I score my first, the pressure will be released.”
