10. Kolo Toure

Ivorian centre-back Kolo Toure was handed a six months ban for failing a drug test. The English FA decided on a six month ban that was to end in September 2011, However, after he was once again tested at the Manchester derby in February. the sample tested positive, though Toure said it was water tablets that he was taking to lose some weight. The FA still ruled against him as they were a banned substance.

9. Fernando Couto

Fernando Couto is a Portuguese footballer  who played for a number of clubs clubs including Lazio, Barcelona and Porto. Couto was suspended  when he failed a drug test during his time at Lazio, the test was positive after it showed that nandrolone was present in his system.  he was banned for 9 months but only served 4 months and  a fine of $60,000 in 2001.

8. Mark Bosnich

The former Chelsea Football Club goalkeeper was tested and found positive for drugs, leading to a nine month ban ,Bosnich results found cocaine, though the Australian stopper said that his drink had been spiked with cocaine while out one night. This incident happened in 2002 and he was suspended in April 2003. At the time this was the longest suspension handed out in the English Premier League. Later he was let go by the blues having played only seven Premier League games 

7. Jake Livermore

The English professional player is the other player to have been suspended for drugs as the Hull City midfielder was tested positive for cocaine and he was banned for not playing for his club the coming season serving a two year ban though his club the tigers were relegated from the Premier League back to the Championship. According to experts the drug is undetected in a doping test three to five days after use. Hull had not played in the two weeks prior to the match against Crystal Palace 

6. Garry O’Connor

The other player in our list of the Top 10 Footballers Caught Taking Drugs is Garry O’Connor a Scottish professional football player who was tested positive for cocaine during the 2009 premier league season when he was playing for Birmingham City yet he was only suspended for two months, the player also revealed that he had spent over $5 million on drugs, alcohol and fast cars. A few noticed his ban as his then club manger Alex Mcleish said the striker was out injured.

5. Jaap Stam

It was in 2001 when the former Manchester United defender was tested positive for steroid nandrolone and was given a 5 months ban though following some appeals, his ban was reduced to just one month and he went on to have the best of his football career as before way back in the late 1990s when the Dutch player Jaap Stam was widely regarded as one of the best defenders and rightly i was because he was strong, quick and a technically gifted defender.

4. Edgar Davids

The Italian Olympic Committee ( CONI ) stated that the Holland and Juventus player Edgar Davids was tested positive for norandrosterone and noretiocolanolone and both were banned anabolic steroids after all two separate drug tests were positive he was banned for two years though the ban was reduced to just four months

3. Adrian Mutu

Chelsea Football Club were forced to act again in 2004 when Romanian striker Adrian Mutu was tested for drugs and results were positive for cocaine . He was banned for seven months, sacked and later ordered to pay Fourteen and a half million pounds as compensation. He later rebuilt his career else where in Italy

2. Pep Guardiola

Back in 2001 the F.C Bayern Munchen manager  Pep Guardiola who could play as a midfielder  was tested positive for nandrolone receiving a four months ban later he appealed the decision and even though he was cleared of all allegations, he couldn’t escape the ban. He was tested for drugs just after a few months when he had decided to play for Brescia in the Italian Seria A

1. Diego Armando Maradona

Diego Armando Maradona was banned for 15 months way back in 1991 during his time at Napoli but just because he is one of the best football players the World as seen, this is a reason as to why he is the top player in our list of the Top 10 Footballers Caught Taking Drugs. Maradona was tested positive for a drug test when it was positive of Cocaine and just three years later at the FIFA World Cup campaign, he was tested positive for ephedrine dismissing him from the tournament after just two games
