Chelsea Football Club announced that Jose Mourinho would no longer be their manager yesterday afternoon following the dismal start to the new season, and we though it would be appropriate to look at the games it went wrong for the Special One this season.
Nine defeats in 16 games has left Chelsea 16th in the Premier League and just one-point above the drop zone, but what were the five worst results out of those nine?
SillySeason look back at the horrific run of form for the Blues and the games that could have lost Mourinho his job.
The second loss of the season and the first home-defeat of the campaign.
Chelsea and Jose Mourinho are usually so solid at Stamford Bridge, but it was Alan Pardew once again who caused upset to the Special One.
Goals from Bakary Sako and Joel Ward gave the Eagles all three points and left a bad taste in Chelsea’s mouths as they picked up their second defeat in four games.
This loss came after a defeat, a draw and a victory.
Following their defeat to Crystal Palace, Chelsea travelled to Goodison Park to take on Everton, where they lost 3-1 thanks to a Steven Naismith hat-trick.
Everton tore Chelsea to pieces during the first-half and caused Jose Mourinho a lot of problems throughout the match.
They were given a lifeline when Nemanja Matic pulled it back to 2-1, but they couldn’t turn the game around and fell to their third defeat of the season.
The same amount of games they lost in the entirety of last season.
After the Everton defeat, Chelsea slowly looked like they were turning it around.
They beat Maccabi Tel-Aviv, Arsenal and Walsall, then drew away at Newcastle United, but lost to FC Porto in the Champions League in Portugal.
Then came another shock home defeat, this time, at the hands of Southampton.
Despite taking a 10th-minute lead, Chelsea collapsed to a 3-1 loss to the Saints, resulting in their fourth defeat of the league campaign and their second loss at Stamford Bridge.
They started October with a 3-1 home defeat, they ended the month with a 3-1 home defeat.
However, this one felt worse as it was to Liverpool.
Once again Chelsea took the lead, but once again they threw it away and a Philippe Coutinho brace turned the game on it’s head.
Christian Benteke rubbed salt into the wounds by making it 3-1 and it left Chelsea fading away to the bottom end of the table.
Another home defeat in a shocking run of form.
The worst result of the lot?
At home to recently-promoted Bournemouth and they lost 1-0 thanks to a Glenn Murray goal in the last 10-minutes.
Shocking result for the defending champions and one more nail in Jose Mourinho’s coffin.
In fact, he only managed two games after this defeat. A win against FC Porto and a defeat against Leicester City.
So there are our Five Games that lost Jose Mourinho his job.
Do you agree with the selection?
