FIVE things learned from Wednesday night’s action

1. Leicester are still favourites for the title

After their 2-2 draw at home to West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday night, every one thought that Leicester City’s three point gap at the top of the Premier League would have been reduced.

However, last night all three of their title rivals faltered, providing yet another twist in this extraordinary title race.

Second placed Tottenham Hotspur lost 1-0 at West Ham United, third-placed Arsenal lost 2-1 at home to Swansea City and fourth-placed Manchester City were hammered 3-0 at Liverpool.

With just 10 games to go, the dream is still alive and kicking for the Foxes who remain three points clear at the summit.

2. West Ham pushing for a Champions League spot

A win at home to fierce London rivals Tottenham has not only kept the title race wide open, but it has also blown the race for the top four open too.

The Hammers’ winger Michail Antonio bulleted a header past Hugo Lloris for the only goal of the game, but the victory means West Ham are just one point off the final Champions league spot.

Slaven Bilic was brought in to guide the East Londoners to the next level and he is certainly doing that.

His side are in scintillating form and if they could secure Champions League football for their first season at the Olympic Stadium then that would be an excellent achievement and something they can only build on.

3. So are Manchester United

Louis van Gaal has been scrutinised for large parts of this season and some of his recent results may be seen as lucky, but you have to take your hats off to him at the minute.

Despite Watford creating plenty of chances, United defeated the Hornets 1-0 at Old Trafford thanks to a Juan Mata free-kick. The result leaves the Red Devils level on points with Manchester rivals City who are occupying the final European spot.

To think that van Gaal could guide United Champions League qualification from the position they were in at the turn of the year is a solid achievement.

Especially when he’s had so many injuries to deal with, forcing him to select youngsters such as Guillermo Varela, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, Marcus Rashford and, more recently, Timothy Fosu-Mensah.

It’s four straight wins for the Dutchman and who knows where United will finish or what they will do in what has been a crazy season in England’s top flight.

4. Relegation battle taking shape

With ten games to go, it’s crunch time for the three major battles in the Premier League.

We’ve covered the title race and the push for the top four, but it’s time to look at the race for survival.

Aston Villa look doomed as they are rock-bottom of the pile on 16 points – eight from safety – so it looks as if there are two relegation places to avoid.

Newcastle United (19th) and Norwich City (18th) make up the bottom three and Sunderland are just outside of the drop zone on goal difference.

The three are all locked on 24 points, making it just as tight as the race for the title and the top four.

Swansea have a six point cushion in 16th and Bournemouth are eight points clear in 15th, so you would like to say they are safe but that can all change in the remaining fixtures.

Especially when the Swans host Norwich this coming weekend, which means the relegation picture is still unclear as we head for an exciting climax.

5. Liverpool are improving under Klopp

It’s been a frustrating process for everyone involved at the club, but most people can surely see that Jurgen Klopp is the right man to take Liverpool forward.

This week has been a typical representation of the Reds’ season. It was a massive disappointment on Sunday as they lost on penalties to Manchester City in the Capital One Cup final, only to bounce back and beat City 3-0 at Anfield in a Premier League match last night.

It’s been the same old story all the way through the campaign for this Liverpool team, a poor performance in one game but in the next match they are unplayable.

It’s rumoured that the majority of this squad are playing for their futures at the club, as the German gaffer plans a huge summer shake-up.

And that is exactly what the club needs. Once Klopp begins to build to club around his ideas, philosophies and tactics then that is when we will see the consistent success.

He needs players that suit his ideologies, however, this kind of transition takes time and he needs the patience of the fans as he prepares to change the Merseyside club for the better.
