Gonzalo Higuain has opened up on his relationship with Maurizio Sarri and why he choose to join AC Milan despite interests from Chelsea.

Higuain was on the transfer wishlist of Sarri but somehow the move didn’t materialise in the summer. The pair successfully worked together at Napoli and the Chelsea manager had hoped to achieve similar things in London.

Since then the two has gone onto different ways but the relationship in between them hasn’t changed yet. Higuain spent a couple of years at Juventus and then joined AC Milam this summer.

Sarri brought Jorginho with him to Chelsea and had wanted a reunion with his former striker. Higuain has admitted there had been strong interest from this former manager but Milan were very adamant to bring him in.

“He’s the best manager I had in my career. I showed all my potential with him. I think he is similar to Gattuso: they both want to win and that’s something I really love. We are improving, I think we are now creating more goal chances because Gattuso has found the right tactical balance.”

“Sarri was the only one to want me at Chelsea.

“Everybody wanted at AC Milan, while in London I was only wanted by the manager. AC Milan insisted to sign me, Elliott did a big effort for me and Leonardo, Maldini and Gattuso know the club very well. I really appreciated their approach during the negotiations.”
